For a switch barrel rifle Iād highly consider going custom in youāre interested in shooting the heavier 338 bullets. Iām also strongly point one to the 338 Norma Magnum as it was designed for this exact purpose.
Now I donāt want people to believe that there isnāt a significant power jump in going to a 338 from a 30 cal. There isā¦ the same way thereās a benefit going from 6.5 or 270 to a 30 cal. Thereās a benefit to the larger frontal area and if using the right bullets using a 225-300+ grain bullet. Youāre not going to get the upper end even in a 300 PRC albeit a good choice for all-around hunting.
Yes thereās benefits to going up to the 37-41 caliber rifles but youāll actually get more range from the 338ās short of using exotic wildcats in custom rifles. Most dangerous game hunting is done REALLY close so maximum damage is paramount. Range isnāt usually the greatest consideration.
