1st 300 Win Mag Build

Fellas, I’m building my first 300 Win Mag rifle, which I will use to help a friend run a guide operation this hunting season. Based on my research, years of Backfire videos, and a $5,500ish budget, I think the best thing to do is get a Sako S20 (24” barrel), Banish Backfire Suppressor, and Burris Eliminator VI (to make shots easier for those cubicle warriors). Ideally, I want to keep this build around $5,500, but I am flexible to get the best bang for my buck on a precision rifle that increases everyone’s chances of success.

Do you think this is the best build in that price range, or should I consider paying more for the rifle and leveling down on the scope to the Burris Veracity PH or something similar?

Lastly, assuming we land on the Sako S20 300 Win Mag, I see that the 212-grain ELD-X tends to be the most accurate hunting cartridge in that rifle. Does anyone have any experience with this?

Depending upon the accuracy results you are looking for; Sako rifles tend to shoot Sako ammo the best. At least in my experience. No personal experiences with the s20 in a 300 Mag.

What state will the rifle be used in? Some don’t allow electronic scopes.

Texas this year. Ideally, it will branch out, but for now, it will be just Texas.

I definitely think you’re on the right track. Sako S20 is an exceptional choice. I have a Sako 90 in 300 win mag and it’s the same barreled action as the Sako S20.

Tikka and Sako use their own ammo to fine tune accuracy. The load that works the best in my Sako 90 is this one so I’ve gotta think it’ll also work best in your rifle. It’s the Sako powerhead Blade 170gr.

For the scope, I 100% agree with you on the Eliminator. It’s an absolutely incredible scope and very very easy to use for clients that will have limited time to practice before the hunt. I bet you’ll kill a few that you would otherwise miss if the client had to figure out dope and dial.

We do sell the Eliminator on BackfireShop. We always price it at the minimal allowable sales price, and you can get an extra 10% off with coupon code PLUS. Burris Eliminator 6 4-20x52mm Scope – Backfire

You’ve obviously done your research on this build. This setup will be absolutely IDEAL.

I have an S20 300 WinMag, stock off the shelf and it shoots lights out with 212 gr ELDX handloads. I think you will have a good shooting rifle.
