Hi guys, I am having a rifle built by Fierce Firearms. It will be a 22 CreedMoor. I am planning on using the gun for deer hunting without a suppressor and also long range shooting/coyote varmint shooting with a suppressor. I cannot decide if I should go 24" OR 26" what would you do and why? Any prompt responses would be greatly appreciate. Thanks guys ![]()
Is 20” an option? You can go pretty short on the barrel in 22 creed and still top 3000fps.
Yes it is an option. But I am going for maximum velocity here
I will be re-loading as well. Is it bad to go that long of a barrel?
The only downsides to the longer Barrel are
- Weight
- Maneuverability
Depending upon the specific style of hunting you’re going to do Alters how important those are to you. For instance, around here we typically hunt out of blinds and a very long gun is going to be a pain to maneuver.
That makes sense. It will be western hunting. For mule deer, antelope, coyotes and long range target shooting
It’s not bad, you’re just at the point of diminishing returns already without a longer barrel and are going to give up some nice quality of life functionality when carrying in the woods. The 22 Creedmoor is a speed demon. My 16” barrel is going to shoot the 88 ELDM with a MV around 2,860. That bullet will expand properly to just shy of 700 yards. That’s a lot farther than I ever plan to shoot when hunting and I don’t have a need for a barrel that’s longer.
My choice would be 24 inches. That is what I am getting for my .25 Creedmore. You can always shorten it if its bothersome, you can’t add more to it. Look at the velocities you get with 24 inch barrels and compare with 26 inch barrels. You aren’t going to find alot of difference and if you are reloading for it you will be able to maximize your return for the shorter barrel, most likely.
Good luck.
