280 Ackley Improved Rifle

Hello everyone. I want to purchase a rifle chambered in 280 Ackley Improved but I do not know where to start or what manufacturers offer it. What are some rifle manufacturers that offer the chambering and what issues/dislikes have you experienced? Also, what do you like about yours? I am looking for a good, quality rifle that I can hunt with and enjoy. Thank you. All help is appreciated.

I purchased a Fierce Rage in 280AI over the summer and am very impressed with it so far. It’s accurate, and with a suppressor attached, doesn’t kick/recoil at all.

Fierce makes several models in the 280. I just prefer the rage because I’m more used to Sako actions over Rem 700 style. That’s just a personal preference. I have several examples of each in my safe right now.

Browning, Christensen, Savage, and Weatherby make rifles in that cartridge. No experience with any of them. If you go to GunBroker you can also find some from Cooper and Kimber.

Edit:

What’s your purpose for the rifle? I only ask because if you’re looking at wanting to shoot the extra-long/heavy bullets with it. You want to make sure you get a rifle with the appropriate twist rate. Many of the above mentioned companies only do 1:9 and that might not stabilize some of the longer heavier ones.

Thank you. I will look into Fierce. My purpose will be for hunting. What barrel twist would you recommend? Should I lean towards heavier bullet weights?

Tough one. Depends upon what exactly you’re planning on hunting and the distances you’re planning on shooting at. Then add to that the type, construction, and weight of the bullet you want to use.

My primary target is deer, and I’m planning on using 139 lrx bullet. Therefore I don’t really need super fast twist rates. I will defer elk or larger to the experts in those fields.

Thank you again. I plan to hunt elk and deer. I have not considered the distances yet. I imagine using a heavier bullet and faster twist rate is the route I am going to take.
