280 AI vs 7 PRC in shorter barrel

Got a friend (I know how it sounds but it’s true, I’m not buying anything right now) who is getting ready to have a custom rifle build. Primarily Whitetail but occasional Elk.

He initially was set on 280 AI. But one consideration in this build will be a shorter barrel. Not for suppressor, but most of his hunting is out of climbing tree stands and box blinds with little room.

We’ve had discussions on this forum of how well the 7 PRC does out of shorter barrels.

Does it have an advantage over the AI in this case?

Thanks

Given the use you have said …Just pick what you shoot accurate. The shorter barrel probably works best in a tree stand!

Flattest shooting cartridges will sum up the difference.

The difference between a 6.5 creedmoor and a 6.5 PRC is going to be similar to the difference between 280ai and 7prc.

With the same weight bullets the PRC will be 200ish fps faster at the cost of 10 more grains of powder.

Personally I would go 280ai if you reload and have the time to tinker with loads. 7PRC is essentially factory ammo ready

I took this question in the podcast this last week. Be sure to give it a listen, but in short, 280ai has less powder but a skinner case.

The 7 prc will produce more velocity in the shorter barrel, but both will lose a similar amount of speed per inch of barrel removed.

Oh yeah, i heard it. First time I’ve been mentioned on the www/podcast arena!

I shared your info with my friend. He’s still trying to decide between the two.

Thanks
