308 Super (Vortex)

Here’s something I wish I could afford to do (but already spending that money on the 6GT/6.5PRC gun)

Tikka T3x Lite in .270 (an excellent rifle as is) - then add a barrel chambered for .308 Super
You’d need to work up a load, but you’re looking at a solid copper round that’s 212 gr with a G1 BC 0.705 G7 BC .350
Recoil is a bit heavier than a .308, but not a lot. And it’s better at longer ranges 300+ than a .30-06

Looks like a really unique load. I’d like to try one.

Like Vincent, I heard about this .308 Super a few months ago on the Vortex Nation podcast. Listened to it 3-4 times because I was fascinated by the concept. They have 2 different youtube videos as well, one showing what this load does in gel at 575 yds, both with 308 and the 300 WSM version. Recommended viewing, very compelling to a guy who was getting tired of his anemic .308.

The guys at Barnes are talking about it on their podcast as well…and I actually talked at length with the guy at Barnes who is playing with the 308 Super. Muzzle velocity is only 2500 (with Varget), but incredible long range terminal performance due to 1. the very high BC and 2. because the functional window on this bullet goes down to about 1600 fps (some would say 1500 but…). Effective hunting range 800+ yds (some say 960 yds max assuming 1500 min terminal velocity), not that I would take that shot. But great for 1000-1200 yds at the range.

So finally I ordered mine. Long action, 1:8 twist to stabilize the very long 212gr bore rider, and nothing different about the chamber, just SAAMI specs. So you can still shoot 130s, 150s, 168s, etc. Can’t wait to get it.

Now I’m intrigued. Guess I have some YouTubing between cases while working today.

I predict you’ll get hooked…if you are already a .308 guy.

Just watched the Vortex video. With the 300 WSM Super, they’re doing what I’ve been pondering for a year now with the 270 WSM, long action, heavy bullet, fast twist. I need another project like I need a second wife, but another project would be cheaper and less stress.

Love it! Long action 270 WSM, fast twist to stabilize high BC bullets…who needs 6.8 Western?
