Hey everyone I’m new to the group after a week of binge watching on YouTube.
I’ve decided to add another rifle this time in a 6.5 creedmoor mainly for long range shooting but can also be used for deer and smaller game. I’m choosing this cartridge so that my wife can also shoot it comfortably.
My question to you guys is on what rifle to get from about $850 and under that is a nice gun and can be custom built as I go. I already own a Tikka t3x lite in 300 win mag but wasn’t sure of the recoil in the same gun for the 6.5 for my wife.
I have a Tikka in 6.5 CM and it shoots great, recoil is not bad at all. Another one to look into is a Howa 1500 build. You have a lot of options there, either with a full rifle, or start with the barreled action from Brownell’s and pick a stock to go with it.
You might also look at the bergara ridge. For an inexpensive rifle it comes with a nice properly threaded barrel, 5/8 in threading. Stock isn’t the best but you’re most likely be replacing that since it’s a build gun.
Thanks for the input. I’ve been looking at those two so I will do more research and comparison for how they are stock to where I want to end up with the build.
All the recommendations have been solid. The Howa/Weatherby Vanguards are underrated perhaps. Tikka is a consistent and solid choice. Bergara seems to be solid too. Another option would be the Ruger American as they tend to shoot well and have good aftermarket options as well.
Now if you’re after a DIY build then perhaps it’s worth just getting into an aftermarket action to build on. Honestly, you’re going to be into custom costs if you do much more than add an aftermarket stock and trigger. Once you start adding new barrels you will realize that your donor rifle is money that can be spent on a custom action especially since we are about to have Black Friday sales. So if you’re prepared to spend $850 on a donor rifle then perhaps another $100 or so gets you a custom action to build on to begin with. I’m only suggesting this because that gives you a year to get the rest of the parts since she’s unlikely to hunt this year anyway. This is the route that I took after exploring the route that you’re going.
If you’re still convinced to go the donor rifle way then I’d probably go Tikka since there are plenty of prefit and readily stocked aftermarket parts available if you’re not going with a Remington 700 footprint action.
