6.5 PRC or 6.5 CM

I have at my local gun retailer the 6.5 both in PRC and Creemoor
I want to do some hunting with it but mostly want to shoot long range.
The Rifle I am looking at is Begara Carbon HMR.
They also have shelves full of the creedmoor ammo and much smaller selection of the PRC.
I am having issues with deciding what route to go. Is there anything over the other that screams get this?

Assuming the barrel lengths are the same between the two rifles, the PRC is going to shoot the exact same projectiles as the Creedmoor but at a higher velocity.

From a hunting standpoint that could help extend your effective range. Personal opinion but I would say the Creedmoor is a 300 yard and in Rifle where is the PRC stretches that out a little bit further.

But as you’ve already noted, there’s a lot more availability of Creedmoor ammo, it’s also cheaper, and because it’s at lower velocity it doesn’t give you quite as much recoil as the prc.

If you’re looking at hunting deer size game at 300 yards and in, and just ringing some steel out to long distances then the Creedmoor would be fine.

The PRC has 2 in longer Barrel. Due to my area 200 hundred yards at Deer is long shot for most. I currently shoot whistle pis and coyotes up 500 with my 22 250. I have hunted Deer with my 3006 and 270 wsm.
I really want to ring steel at 1000 plus.

Oh well if the PRC has a 2 inch longer Barrel then you’re going to get an even better velocity increase. Would have to pull out the ballistics tables to get the specifics.

Personal opinion here again but I consider the Creedmoor to be basically in the same class of cartridges as 308/243/ 7-08/ etc. Good for hunting out to 300 and ringing steel out much further. I’ve taken my Creedmoor out to 800 and that’s as far as I’ve got a range for around these parts. I’m sure we can find examples of people shooting well out to a thousand or Beyond with it.

The PRC is basically a modern day 270 Winchester. So I would rank it in the same class along with 30-06, 280, Etc.

Very helpful. Thank you.
I have the 30 06 and did just rid myself of the 270wsm. But both have very thin barrels and did not like being shot alot. They got pretty warm quick. The 270 was extremely picky about ammo and being WSM it was extremely hard to find and very expensive.

Both would be good options. Ringing steel at 1,000 is very doable with a creedmoor. Hunting up to 500 is also doable. It’s a good match for what you’re doing.

The PRC is fantastic and will certainly shoot flatter out to distance. However, the recoil on the PRC makes it tougher to spot your impacts.

Tough call honestly. I don’t know that you can go wrong, but I’d lean Creedmoor.
