Just finished load development on a 7PRC and looking for a new lightweight gun I can shoot more without burning out the barrel. Out of 6.5PRC, 6.5CM or 22ARC what would be your favorite and what gun? Possibilities=2020 Waypoint, SigCross or ?
22 ARC too new right now for me to make a recommendation either for or against it.
Between the other two, since you already have a PRC I would recommend going with a 6.5 Creedmoor. Wider selection of rifles, wider selection of ammo, more readily available ammo, and cheaper ammo if you’re buying commercial. If you need to step up the power you already have 7 PRC.
And longer Barrel life.
As for which rifles. I had a Tikka T3 varmint that was awesome and would shoot super small groups. However I ended up selling it because it was just too big and clunky for me to keep and use. Right now my only Creedmoor is a Bergara MG Lite and it’s a fine gun.
The 22 ARC is more of a semi auto cartridge, but I have seen some nice bolt action ones that folks have put on YouTube. If you want a Sig Cross or Waypoint, I think you will need to have it gunsmith’d (I could be wrong). All the 22 ARCs I’ve seen are custom builds.
I was debated between the 22 ARC and the 22 Creedmor for my next Bolt and I am leaning towards the Creedmor, but, like the ARC, it looks like it will have to be a build unless I want a Horizon/Fierce rifle.
What do you want to do with this newer lightweight gun? How many rounds do you shoot per year?
I know there’s some discussions that the CM will turn the ARC into a lead balloon, or at least relegate it to second or third tier status from a cartridge standpoint
Using it mostly for practice and would like to hunt coyote’s/hogs some time. Would like it to be a family gun that is easier to shoot than the 7prc, which I have about 350 rounds thru. I have read that I may only get 700-800 rounds thru the 7prc.
I am thinking 700-1,000 rounds per year with the new gun. I also have an AR on the need list
I can recommend a Solus Bravo 6.5cm or .308 if you’re looking for more of a target/varmint gun that doesn’t have to be particularly light and you’re looking to keep ammo costs down.
The Hanson barrel that comes with it is quite good and it’s extremely easy to switch calibers later (takes Zermatt origin prefits).
A 6.5 creedmoor would be a good option for what you’re describing but personally I’d go for the 22 Creedmoor. Very low recoil, enough power for anything up to and including deer, cheap to shoot. I don’t think you’ll wear out that barrel very fast.
22 ARC is a cool cartridge but really makes the most sense in an AR. If it’s a boot gun, I’d lean to the 22 Creedmoor.
