Hey Jim just finished watching your flattest shooting cartridge video and was just wondering how the 6 creed would stack up against the 22 creed
Have you seen Jim’s spreadsheet that you can get from backfire.com/ballistics? He does have the 22 creedmoor on there. Looks like 6 creed only drops about 4" more than the 22 @ 400 yd, and about 10" difference at 600. I might wait until shot show, hopefully some more manufacturers will announce offerings for these. Choices right now are limited even for the 6mm which has been around a couple years already (of course, not as limited as the 22 creed which is brand new and pretty much only made by Horizon from what I can see).
Trust me I know I’ve been looking for a 6mm for a while now and have finally given up and decided to build one on a tikka action myself. I think I’m still going to stick with the 6 over the 22 just because of the power factor because I’m mainly building it for my son to deer hunt with in the future but the 22 creed is definitely a sweet cartridge.
I really like 6 creed but honestly the 22 creed may replace it for me. The advantage of 22 creed is you’re shooting heavy for caliber 80gr bullets BUT with so light of recoil that you can spot impacts easily.
6 creed is awesome but I wouldn’t hunt anything bigger than deer and 22 creed can kill the same animals.
The only thing to watch is making sure it’s legal to hunt deer with 22 cal in your state.
I’ve come to a similar conclusion. Think I’ll stick with the 6mm which is a sweet spot for both predator and deer hunting. I’d love a Tikka in 6 creed. If you do put that together, I hope you share photos/story when done! I am hoping Tikka refreshes their lineup and maybe adds threading to the normal T3x. Maybe some of these newer chambering options too. But we’ll see…
Well honestly if proof offered a prefit barrel in 22 creedmoor I would consider it over the 6 because everything I’m watching on the e 22 makes me want one
Nice… if you don’t mind my asking…
Looks like a proof research barrel–and the stock is from?
Total build dollar amount?
Total build weight (w/o optic)?
Aside from stock and barrel, did you have to get a new bolt or bolt face for 6.5 PRC? What other components are necessary (I have one Tikka now that I could repurpose but not sure what all is involved yet).
Yes it was a proof prefit barrel and the stock is a mess precision I already had the rifle so my total cost was around $1700 if you don’t have an action to build on go ahead and figure another $750. The rifle was chambered in 270 wsm so no I did not have to change the bolt I did have to buy another magazine but that’s no big deal. You will need a barrel vise, tikka action wrench, a torque wrench, and so go-no go headspace gauges. Also to take the factory barrel off you will need a external action wrench and possible a cheater bar. All in all once the barrel and stock came in it took about 5 minutes to take the only gun apart and put the new one together.
Looks fantastic Hunter. Great setup.
Jim I think I’m going to have to stop watching your videos for a while because now I want the 22 creedmoor and the 6mm. Your going to make me go broke! Lol
That’s my goal every morning—destroy Hunter’s bank account ![]()
Jim, speaking of spending money. I am looking at buying or building a 22 CM. I have a Horizon Vandal C in mind and am ready to pull the trigger (pun intended) but I am unsure of an 18" barrel. I will be using a can so that helps as far as over length. However I was wanting a 20" barrel. My other option…that I am leaning towards is buying a Tikka Super Varmint in 22-250 and having it rechambered in 22 CM. Then wrapping it up in a KRG Whiskey 3 Chassis. I know its only 2 inches but…“it matters” LOL. Can I have your thoughts? I don’t have a Tikka and all I hear is how AWESOME their actions are. This will be my Predator/Hog gun hunting AG land in Florida with a < 300 yd (probably < 200 yd proposition). My 300 Blkout suppressed is hard to beat with my Rico Mk 1 but I really want a 22 CM. Then I will need a new Backstop Recoil pad of course…thanks.
Shawn
Honestly the 2 inch barrel difference is not that big of a loss in performance In most cases and you really wouldn’t see the difference until out past 600 yards just because the creedmoor is such an efficient cartridge. Combine that with high bc bullets that carry velocity longer distances I really don’t think your going to be unhappy with the 18” barrel. On top of that I don’t know if money is an issue for you but it will come out cheaper to buy the horizon firearms that it will to build the tikka if you don’t already have a action to build on.
Thank you for the response…I have impulse bought so many things in my past…I want to make sure I get this right. Without sounding arrogant, I am blessed. My wife’s hobby is horses…so I am able to spend a few bucks on myself without any complaints! I think the saying goes…Happy Wife, Happy Life!!! LOL.
Yeah, I agree with Hunter. You’ll never notice the 2” of barrel length. I would go with the Horizon 22 Creedmoor no questions asked. Their guns are absolutely awesome. Flawless.
Thanks Jim…Thanks for the Airport Podcast last night too!!
