7 PRC is incredible in short barrels

Shot Hornady precision Hunter ammo out of my 20” 7 PRC and my 24” 7 PRC. Velocity difference? Just 55fps.

Thats an interesting discovery. I am curious as to why that might be happening. I have known reloaders to sqeeze higher velocity out of shorter barrels but this is different ( being factory ammo). Certainly there is more powder burning in the longer barrel?

It’s a pretty fat case, which helps to burn powder faster, but I know Hornady really wanted this in short barrels, so they may be using a faster powder.

I wish you could get the results out of a 18 inch barrel. If it’s only going to drop another 55 or so that would be an awesome length for a suppressor. I love shooting a suppressor but hate when it makes the rifle like 28 inches long.

Jim:

The following barrel-length test-series would be highly informative to this community – especially as regarding those having interest in suppressed hunting options:

Using otherwise identical Browning X-bolt 6.5-PRCs, assess muzzle-velocities for their 20, 24 & 26-inch barrel-length offerings – all using the same factory ammunition [ideally, Hornady’s 130gr CX Outfitter ammo*].

A wide range of rule-of-thumb “opinions” exists regarding velocity differences per inch of barrel-length for various cartdidges.** Now, with options available from Browning in this relatively new chambering, real-world numbers could readily be established.

  • Please contact me to best discern the logic behind the suggested test-ammo, and to discuss other proposed test-parameters [and my willingness to fund the needed factory ammo, and the possibly of post-test purchase of one of the test-rifles].

** Depending on one’s source, everything from as low as 8-fps/inch to as high as 50-fps/inch of barrel-length change has been suggested as on various forums. This would be an excellent opportunity to assess the reality, at least as regarding one nominal factory loading.

Thanks,

Good idea. I’ll see if I can get my hands on those.

Thanks for considering this, Jim. (Their “Mountain Pro” configurations [in 20", 24" & 26"] look most appealing.)

Will this concept apply to 7 rem mag?
Furthermore, can you guys give me some insight here please, I appreciate everyone’s input in advance.
I am looking to build or customize 7 RM, What will be the shortest acceptable barrel length topped with suppressor to meet these parameters:
-Effective range 600 yrds,
-Energy at POI 1500

Thanks again
