7 Rem Mag and 22 inch barrel

Fierce has a hunting rifle in 20, 22 and 24 inch in 7 REM MAG. I like the 22 inch carbon barrel and plan to add 5.5 inch suppressor for elk hunting in high country and back country. Is a 22 inch long enough for using 7 REM Mag for burn and fps? Thank you for any insights!

You’ll take a little velocity hit, but it’ll be worth the small price for a more compact gun. How much the velocity will be reduced will depend quite a lot on the load.

Thanks so much Jim! Will that velocity hit make much of a difference if just shooting from 80 to 400 yards?

Hey Todd, I’m sure Jim will provide his more thorough information. However, in my exprience with my 7 Rem Mag rifle, as long as you choose your cartridge wisely, I don’t think the small velocity hit will hurt too much up to 400 yards.

I have spent a fair bit of time looking at ballistics charts across a wide variety 7RM cartridges at various grain weights.

That said, I truly believe it would be in your best interest to buy a box of rounds at various grain weightts (or reload if you are able) and develop the DOPE that is specific to your rifle with the can attached!

Good luck and happy hunting!!!

Thanks Pete! So wish I was a reloader but not sure I have the bandwidth to learn. From all accounts it takes lots of time and precision……

I was all set to buy a rifle in 7 PRC since a host of videos said if they were about to get a rifle they would go 7 PRC, if they already had a 7RM they would stick with it. Then I heard Jim on the Mancast say 7PRC has issues and unless you are a reloader, you could run into a problem with 7PRC factory ammo not performing with your barrel. That made me hesitate and look at 7RM closely with a can as Jim mentioned the 7RM. But with a can, a 22 inch barrel is so appealing when climbing over downed trees and moving in tight spaces in the back country for elk. Want to go as light as possible but manage recoil so was thinking a Force Carbon Rogue in 7RM with a Banish can either with 22 or 24 barrel. Saving those 2 inches would be nice and also trying to get the right weight and performance for a scope. So if I only have ONE gun for elk, there is a lot to think about…. Thanks for your insights!!!

Glad I was able to provide some thoughts of value.

For my rifle (Sake S20 Precision in 7RM), I have been keeping DOPE info on all the various cartriges I as I test, from 139gr up to what my rifle loves, the Hornady 162gr ELD-X. I haven’t been able to locate some Norma 165gr in 7RM yet, but have a feeling the rifle would love it as well. LOL.

Awesome! How available is the Hornady 162 ELD-x

There are stores online that have it in-stock. Occasionally one of the larger stores (Bass Pro/Cabelas/Scheels/Sportsman’s Warehouse) will have some in stock.

When I was in Phoenix last week, visiting my Mom, I stopped at a store in PHX that seems to keep it in-stock (7RM 162gr ELD-X at Bruno Shooters Supply)

I think that the issue with 7PRC is not anything about the cartridge or rifle - its just that there are not 100 types of ammo available to sort thru if you had to to find one for your particular rifle. But you should not have to for newer rifles and the newer loads. I chose 7PRC over 7RM. I agree with the statement if you have RM stay with it but I am looking to the future with the prc particularly with high bc bullets in shorter barrels.
