7mm Backcountry

Just curious of everyone’s thoughts on the 7mm bc
. I like the idea of the shorter barrel for suppressor but is this worth investing into yet? Has anyone purchased a rifle chambered in the cartridge yet ?

I just wonder why they used a 100 year old cartridge design? I wonder what would happen if they designed a more efficient cartridge with the new alloy like a creedMoor, prc, arc, SAUM, wsm, erc, etc. seems kinda lazy to neck down a 30-06 to 7mm and call it good. Maybe I’m missing something?

Check out episode 366 of the big game hunting podcast. The Firearms editor for outdoor life goes over this. Apparently short and fat does not do well with 80,000 PSI. But long and skinny does.

But he also goes on to say that the 7 BC and the 277 Sig are just the beginning. there are several more offerings coming down the pipe which will " leave the 7 BC in the dust" ( his words)

It’s going to be interesting seeing where this goes in the future. If you look at the recent answer Jim gave me when I asked him about the patents for the cartridges. If multiple companies are going to be coming out with multiple new cartridges, each with its own patent in terms of case design, metal design, we are going to be in a situation where 7 BC only comes from federal, 277 Sig only comes from Sig, etc, etc, etc. Going to be hard for one particular cartridge to suddenly rise above the pack and rule them all.

I am very intrigued by it myself. But at this point I’m not ready to jump into the pool. Therefore I’m holding off on purchasing a rifle until some of the dust settles and we get some questions answered.

For me personally, the reloading one is top of the list. If it’s not able to be reloaded, or if it’s a much more complicated reloading process, and the only company you can buy Factory ammo from is federal, then I’m probably not going to invest in it.

That’s interesting; thanks for the info! I’ll check it out. I’m curious to see where this all goes. I agree that the big question is, can it be reloaded, and what does that look like?
