I am thinking about building a new rifle for my dad in either 7 saum or 7prc what are the advantages/ disadvantages of these two cartridges (I reload so ammo available is not an issue).
7 SAUM will shoot better in lighter rifle platforms. It won’t match the speed of the PRC. Some people worry about the short neck on the SAUM but I haven’t heard anyone having real world issues.
There’s a custom 7 SAUM in my local gun shop on consignment for $1200 from Boring Rifles that has a great reputation.
Jim for $1200 how do you not already own that rifle lol I’m leaning toward the 7 saum a little bit anyway because it will mainly be used for deer hunting with the slight possibility of once in a lifetime elk hunt later down the road. My only issue is proof no longer makes a 7 saum prefit…
Oh, haha. Didn’t notice it was you on this thread, Hunter. It’s at Dixie Gun and Fish. I’m having a hard time not buying it.
It’s in a cheap Oryx chassis but I’d change out the stock. But the barreled action is a great deal.
Do 7 SAUMs typically come with faster twist barrels?
Well Jim if I didn’t live 29hrs away you wouldn’t be tempted by it anymore. I wish the gun stores in my area carried nice rifles. The nicest rifles my local stores ever have are Bergera b-14’s and occasionally a tikka. Sportsman’s usually has 4-5 nice production rifles that that’s about it. You western guys get all the nice stuff!
If you really did want it I’m sure you could call the shop and ask them to put it on gunbroker for you. Just tell them I told you about the gun.
29 hours is a little far. I thought I’d remembered you living in Utah. Whoops.
Haha Nope I live in North Carolina so it’s a pretty good drive. If your ever interested in hunting some world class black bears hit me up.
Of course I am!
Nice! That boy was eating well!
Western North Carolina state record a buddy of mine killed in 2022 it weighed 805 pounds.
Woah. That’s the fastest bear I’ve ever seen.
I disagree ![]()
Yeah it didn’t move very fast but Jim’s fingers sure do when he’s typing!
Wow,he’s a big boy, how did you get him out of the woods?
We have a portable gas powered winch and a lot of rope luckily this one wasn’t far from a road.
Thanks, taking and animal in the back country bigger than you can move is a delima, I nearly killed my self packing out deer meat. Didn’t think of the distance at the time.
