I am an advocate for the 7prc as I think it’s got a bad wrap. But this is what I have discovered, it does need a seriously rigid stock, which, in my mind, rules out anything budget. It also needs to be moderate weight, at least 9 pounds. Though I have less info on this than the previous standards, I also feel like it benefits greatly if the rifle is well balanced. I also wouldn’t go shorter than 22" on the barrel.
So, for me this means the 7prc is best suited to a custom or semi custom setup.
Seriously looking at the Tikka Roughtech. It has a heavier, but fluted barrel and a more conventional stock that I am used to. Also, I may want to try a Backlite chassis on it. With a scope and trimmings I think it will be heavy enough, but not too heavy.
I still haven’t found a factory 7 prc that I love. I did get my Tikka T3x lit shooting decent in 7 prc in the accuracy database. I think it would do much better in a platform like the Ace Game or the CTR.
I’m just not sure I want to lug around a big chassis and put a can on it that moves it to 53+ inches.
I’m looking for a hunting rig. As much as I would love to shoot paper, I just don’t have that opportunity here.
I’m also not thrilled at the ammo choices (factory rounds).
Sooooo many options are overwhelming. I wish I had Jim’s job and could shoot, record, verify, and interpret all day. But I’m not that articulate or photogenic.
I’m waiting on the Jim’s Chassis I have a stainless Tikka and suppressor and I think the Backfire chassis might be rhe medicine to make this thing shoot. I’m ready for a unit to test
I just went the other way, bought a Tikka Ace Game and may eventually put a Roughtech stock on it for hunting. Should be here Friday. Have a Backstop on the way and still deciding on a brake/ suppressor. I want to shoot it factory first and see what I’m dealing with.
I was trying to wait on the chassis before getting a 7prc but I got antsy. I bought a fierce mnt reaper in 7prc a few weeks ago. Put a Q speakeasy on it, it does not like factory loads however it loves the dirt nap 160 barnes lx though. Almost 3k-fps, 2994avg. Backfire recoil pad is significantly better than the fierce stock pad, which to be honest was an above average pad in my opinion. Went with an American defense bt46 bipod for a little extra weight. Rifle scoped (nightforce nx8 2.5-20) unloaded weighs 8.9#s, it is almost too light for more than hunting. (I got a very nice end of year bonus and splurged, my other rifle is an older .270 sako mark iv)
I run a Bergara B-14 Squared Crest with a Banish Backcountry suppressor, and shoot the ammo that Bergara recommended I use, which is Norma Bondstrike 165 grain, and can consistently shoot sub-MOA groups with it. For factory guns/loads, it’s the best combination I’ve personally shot in a 7 PRC.
After a few minutes at the bench, these are my first impressions. I need to make few adjustments to the scope. Eye relief at the bench was off, I had to move my head in closer than I wanted at full magnification.
I shot Hornady 175 gr ELD-XPrecision Hunter in 4 shot groups to find a zero. Target was 100 yards, so I wanted 1.5 inches high for an eventual 200 yard zero.
The first group was 5.5 inches high, so the laser bore sight was not bad! The wind was gusty from left to right, so I was okay with the impact hitting .5 to the right. I could only find 3 of the 4 first rounds. I have no idea which one flew, but the 3 that hit were right at 1 inch group.
The Vortex Viper 6.5 - 20 scope was adjusted down 3 inches and we fired again. Again 3 in an inch and one flyer about an inch above that.
I dialed the scope down another inch and the fourth group had 2 round that were decent, 1 that was about a half inch high, and 1 that flew high and right.
The recoil was not as bad as I had read, but it was not a kitten. I’m a little concerned about that lost round. I want to make a few adjustments to the recoil pad height, and put the Backstop on it, and probably add a muzzle brake. There’s no way I could see the impact.
Also, the ammunition for the 7 PRC was slightly less than the 7 Rem Mag. There were only 2 options, the Precision Hunter I shot and the 180gr ELD Match. I think the variance is a little ammo and a little shooter.
As I get more comfortable with the rifle I think the groups will shrink. Right now, I’m adjusting the setup. Next I’ll work out the ammunition. I’m going to check the bolts and adjust the screws, but I’m sure I’ll be happy as I tinker.
Personally, I typically don’t start getting hung up on group sizes, and flyers until there’s at least 60 if not 100 rounds through the gun.
Also personally I have found that the federal 175 eldx loading shoots more accurately than the Hornady. Also the Factory Barnes 160 shoots better than Hornady
I have the Seekins ph3 7prc 22in barrel. I like it. Took a Muley and 5x6 bull this past year with it. Shoots a few factory loads sub moa consistently. With scope and bipod it’s about 10.5LBs. Only upgrades Iv made with it is added backfire recoil pad, and changed factory muzzle brake to an area419.
