Anyone tape their Muzzle?

Saw a short video of the MdT guys talking about using electrical tape over the muzzle and ports of the break when hunting. Last season my buddy lost an elk from a wayward shot at a distance he doesn’t miss from. After checking his scope, he determined that he must have had debris in his muzzle.

I haven’t tried taping, but that would be the easier cheapest solution for a break or suppressor. Anyone do this?

I have not done it yet but from what I’ve heard there’s no downside to it. Ron Spomer and Randy Newberg have talked of it

I put blue painters tape on my suppressor or bare muzzle when I hunt. Living in SE Alaska with the weather and me slipping sometimes, I don’t want to have anything get down the muzzle that is not supposed to be there

Yeah, I tape my muzzle. Haven’t seen any impact on accuracy and it helps not just for mud but if it’s raining a lot.

Its commonplace here in Alaska.

Seems like a lot of people use electrical tape as well. Seems like that would do better in different weather conditions. Never done it before, might have to try it this year.

I use finger cots, you can find them at any drug store. They go about 2" down that barrel. I keep a baggie in my pack as some of my rifles use finger size, some us thumb size. The air in front of the bullet will blow them off before the bullet ever gets to the muzzle.

James Eagleman at Barbour Creek Outdoors youtube channel uses tape over the barrel. I’ve learned a lot from that guy…

Would the large fit over a suppressor?

No sir, but a magnum might - tape may be easier across the face of a suppressor. Good comment, have hunted with one until this year, need to figure that out.

Actually, I think I will cut a panel out of a quart sized ziplock and rubber band or zip tie it around my suppressor. Going to the range next week, will report back on if it changes POI.

In Vietnam they used condoms over the muzzle.

I was going to do that last hunt… but wasn’t looking forward to explaining what I was doing lol.

I always had tampons in my hunting trailer. Always had to explain I tied the string to the fence on my feeder pens and used Doe scent on the cotton.

Doesnt hurt anything if done right, only thing could be if someone decided to store the weapon that way, seems it would increase the likelihood of condensation developing in the barrel forming rust. Will say after 20 years of being in the light infantry, doing 50% of all ground movement at night over any terrain type, we never worried about covering the muzzles. I can count the few number of times where I fell and hit muzzle first into the dirt, maybe 1 or 2 out of 1000s of hours in the field. The point of having it in areas where you have a lot of snow or ice is a good one…when we were unfortunate enough to be travelling in muddy conditions, where there was a good amount of clay and slippery, keeping your feet was an act of focus or you would find yourself on the ground.

I’ve hunted in the snow in Alberta almost every year for over fifty years. Almost always use electrical tape over the muzzle, but I’ve never taped a brake. Keeps the muzzle clean and doesn’t affect accuracy.

I have used tape, as well as kids balloons for years. The advantage of a balloon is that it fits snuggly over the end of the barrel but the air blast ahead of the bullet blows it out of the way. Tape works too, but in wet weather the tape sometimes has a tendency to come loose and can get knocked off when going through brush. The balloon conforms to the barrel and doesn’t use an adhesive to stay in place.

Saw these “rifle condoms” on Amazon. Haven’t purchased them to know if they work.

I have them, not worth the money.
