AR-10 6.5 for deer hunting

Hello everyone, I am new to the platform. I am researching and thinking about adding a Ruger AR-10 6.5 Creedmoor to my collection. Uses (deer hunting/target) What is your thoughts? With a 20" Barrel it seems to shoot decent. I have only borrowed one on the range for a few shots. It was a fun gun to shoot. I am just not positive the AR-10 Platform is worth it.

Generally speaking - its plenty to do the job on a deer despite the “needsmor” moniker. I have an .223 Wylde that is .5 MOA at 100 so the gas platform can be really accurate, but generally speaking you giving up accuracy and reliability for rapid follow-up shots. I have never taken a second shot on a whitetail, maybe someone else has, so it never really made sense to me to have it for a deer gun. But still, it will get the job done within ~200 yards, maybe a little further.

For target, I think it would be a lot more fun shooting steel than plain old range targets. That’s why I am looking into a 9mm PCC cause I can shoot that for about 22 cents a round as opposed to $1.15.

Should work just fine. Just make sure you figure out what velocity you’re getting out of it and make sure it’s adequate for what your particular bullet needs. Most ARs come with shorter barrels and with the gas system they may not shoot quite as fast as a typical bolt gun.

If you do get the SFAR in 6.5 CM do let us know what you think of it. It’s been one of those that’s on my list for a while, but I still haven’t gotten around to it. Looks like a great gun though.

I built one using Aero Precision upper and lower, a Wilson Combat BCG and barrel, and put a DNT 635R Thermsight on it for predator and feral hogs on my place in Texas. It does fantastic on hogs out to about 600 yards. I have taken a deer with it at just over 200 yards and dropped it with zero problems. They are heavy to carry around, but if you are hunting in some kind of blind they are lots of fun!!!

All, this should probably be a seperate thread, but wanted to ask the following.

Lot of folks on here spend a good deal of funds on rifles, scopes, and ammo; and if the focus is hunting…was wondering how many are possibly frustrated with:
A: access to hunting land (talking whitetail)
B: goal of your hunting (trophy or meat or both)
C: what is an acceptable cost to get a good hunt (I know leases and guided hunts can be expensive)
D. acceptable distance to travel
Maybe within a group of like minded people there are some hunting options that are not cost restrictive; or regulatory restrictive for out of state hunters or cost, or getting tag pulled, etc.

Just wanted to throw that out there to the group.

GREAT POST!!
Probably should be its own thread, but I have a lot of thoughts on this since 1. I don’t come from a hunting family, 2. only started hunting in my mid 30s and 3. in TX, public land hunting is just not worth it (like how much scouting is required becuase of the pressure).

AR-10’s are heavy vs bolt guns. If you want to use a suppressor, the gas in your face is unpleasant. I have both and haven’t hunted with my AR-10 since I got a suppressor. But, a field full of pigs…
