Newbie with a newly built AR-15 (5.56) with a .22LR conversion. I jumped at this as I get my first AR, and my kids (12 and 9 yrs old) can get lots and lots of shooting practice using the .22 conversion. Now that we’ve shot it a few times, it is probably due for a cleaning. Can any of you AR platform gurus recommend a video that shows a proper way to clean/lube and the cleaning supplies I need? There is so much crap on YouTube, I’m need help sorting out the good stuff.
How to Properly Clean and Lubricate an AR15 Midwest Gun Works
This one is on youtube and seems to get at the requirements.
You will get the hang of it pretty quick. Remember, it was built for people to use in the military that have never seen a weapon.
Yep, that video pretty much covers it. You really don’t need to get carried away with the AR. I’m actually more particular with my bolt guns. I like the bore snake for the barrel and run mine a little more wet then was shown in the video. I apply a bit less lube to the BCG and where it needs to go using a needle tip applicator and I don’t wipe it off. This NSSF video is a little more detailed, but I found it helpful many years ago when I was getting into the AR platform.
Oh, and have fun with it! It’s a great gun for kids to practice with especially having the .22LR conversion kit. My kids, now 22, 18, and 13, have put a lot of rounds through mine over the years.
Here is what Erik Cortina does:
He uses Iosso bore cleaner to scrub with on patches . I have used Mother’s mag and aluminum polish with similar result. I never really tried mothers in patches as I use a mop. Mother’s is cheap and cost WAY less. I finish injection molds blow molds with Mother’s. Downside to mother’s is that it is messier. Iosso seems to want more volume of paste where Mother’s likes to be used sparingly and spread thin.
If either gets to dry/crusty just add a few drops of oil. Patch both out with lights amount of oil and the final patching does the finishing touches. Then clean with alcohol.
The lock-ease does seem to work. My cold bore shots seem to be in the normal point of impact.
