I’ve run a lot of heavy equipment over the years and my hearing isn’t what it used to be. It’s not to the point of getting real hearing aids, but I was curious if anyone has used the Axil ear buds or similar devices. They promote that they can be worn to protect your ears from gunfire and also to enhance your hearing when hunting. Looking for actual user reviews…
I bought two pair of the Axil GS. One for me for shooting and one for my wife just for general use. She has a hard time hearing and uses the enhancement to help her. I use mine every day, on the tractor, or shooting on my range or hunting. I also use them to block out kid and wife noises while I listen to music, but don’t tell them. If you buy two pair you get 50% off and for $100 I think they are a steal. They work well, but you will have to fiddle with the earbuds to make sure you get a good seal, but I think the foam they use is superior to standard ear plug foam. They get a thumbs up from me.
I was thinking about doing the wireless ones just because I figured the wires would get pulled and caught on stuff with my bino harness and/or back pack.
How is the sound quality? When I’m hunting, I don’t want crappy sound, I want to be able to hear better than normal without it sounding all tinny…
I absolutely love mine. And my dad uses his as a hearing aid. That being said they are difficult to keep clean. And if you get them dirty enough they need to be sent back to the factory for a deep cleaning it can be somewhat pricey. They also go through batteries fairly quickly. But if the a newer batteries you should get a day and a half or so out of a set… I just put new ones in every time I’m at the range though
I’ve purchased multiple types of noise cancelling ear protection including custom molded to cheaper bulky over-ear models. The custom buds ($$$) fit and seal but run on a one-time-use hearing aid battery which (although inexpensive) are a pain to insert. It’s easy to drop one bud (as they’re not connected) and I’ve almost lost one while shooting on a platform. Controls are hard to operate on the individual buds. I have a pair of the Axil ear buds and find them acceptable, and I like that they are on a wire/connected with a wired/attached controller easy to operate. Harder to drop. As not custom fit, they do not always seal well. By and far, the best hearing protection is over-the-ear protection. I use a gel-cup, low profile, over-the-ear model by Sordin which seals the best of all makes I’ve tried. Easy to use at the range, excellent noise cancelation. They run on rechargeable or standard AAA cells and automatically shut off while not used. While hunting, I use cheap ear plugs.
Thanks for the detailed response, I’m looking for hearing enhancement as well. I ordered the Axil ones as they are currently $100 off so we’ll see!
The sound quality is good. Its not audiophile good, but good enough for podcasts and most music. I’m a bit of an audio snob so I can hear that the music isn’t as good as I would like it, but I am really not aware of a better alternative. Its a heck of a lot better than my walkers.
