Back Country Sleep System

We are hunting Colorado unit 66 in October. I need a sleep system for backcountry hunting. I am 6’ 1" and generally hot natured, although, I can’t sleep if I am cold.

We will likely camp at 9,000 + elevation. I think I want something that is rated for 15 degrees. I think I want a good sleep pad and quilt. What do you guys like?

I have the Big Agnes Insulated Air Core Ultra. It’s 1.4 pounds with an R value of 4.5 . The Big Agnes Rapide is a little lighter and has an R value of 4.8. Before that I had a Therm-a-Rest, which was ok, but I like the one I have now better. I’ve also heard good things about the Nemo Tensor pad. I switched to a quilt last year and have been happy with the Big Agnes Kings Canyon, but I am in CA, not CO.

I use the stone glacier chilkoot. I like buying a sleeping bag and using it like a quilt. Then if it is ever truly freezing, I’ll zip it all the way up.

Neorest xtherm pad.

What type of shelter system do you use for Back Country Hunting? I’ve never been but it does sound rather fun.

Cory, how are you getting out there? ATV, horse, hiking in? Is weight and space an issue?

We packed in 4 miles & camped at 11,300, weight was huge. I went with a Zenbivy 0 degree quilt on a nemo tensor. it was 1st rifle Oct. 12-16, no snow but it got down into the 20’s at night.

I did get a little cold, I would start off naked each night & most nights I had to add base layers. Great adventure & my brother got a 5x5 bull.
