Hey @backfire, just curious what gear you took to Alaska. Specifically which backpacks. I saw one was Eberlestock but I couldn’t make out the model.
Garrett has an Eberlestock. I don’t know the model. I took a Kuiu Pro Guide 7200 which I always seem to pick just because I’m comfortable with it. I honestly haven’t tried that many different packs so I don’t know that I could say which is the best.
Did you have a Nightforce nx8 on your rifle?
Yes. Really like that scope.
If you shoot Mils, DVOR has the nx8 on sale for about $1400. First time Ive ever seen them feature a nightforce. Right now I wish I wasn’t an MOA guy.
Ha, yeah me too!
Looks like this is second focal plane. Are you a sfp guy for hunting scopes?
I personally prefer 2nd fp, I have three NX8. One is first and the other two are second. I know Jim likes first and I think it’s all personal preference. In first focal plane you do get perfect holdovers at any magnification, but when you are at super low magnification, your reticle is pretty tiny and hard to see. I would rather have my reticle look the same all of the time. I feel like the only time I will ever need to hold for wind, and need my holdovers to be perfect is probably going to be atleast a 300+ yard shot, in which case I can zoom all the way into full power if I feel I need to (20x zoom), and trust that my holdovers are perfect. I always dial for elevation. But I’ve honestly never personally been in a situation where I couldn’t just use Kentucky windage and hold slightly one way or the other. I do use FFP on my bench rifle, because I’m shooting that farther and at targets.
Makes sense.
Jim, have you posted any pictures from the Alaska Hunt? I would really enjoy seeing some! Thank you, Ron
We posted a full video on the YouTube channel last week!
Awesome, thank you!
I’m a bit slow these days
Hey @backfire , I’m still waiting for the Jim’s gear vs Garrett’s gear video to come out. I can’t wait to see the results.
