Hey Guys! The Podcast is now published, let me know your thoughts!
One thought is that you were saying the 30-06 is so bad vs the 6.5prc I just don’t think that’s true. The prc is nearly identical to the 270 at most hunting ranges. And the 30-06 is not slower than the prc if you look at the same grain weights. Yes the bc is better but you give up diameter and killing power with a 6.5 vs the 30-06. Tell me I’m wrong or not seeing this correctly
I do think the larger diameter of the 30-06 makes a significant difference in killing power. It is capable out to past 400 yards which is fantastic for nearly everyone.
Living out west, sometimes shots are far and people want a rifle that doesn’t drop below 2000fps out to 600 yards, and that’s really the only place where the 3006 drops off.
I enjoyed the podcast. Interesting to hear which videos got the most views last year. I must say I love my Sako S20 in 300 Win mag, but she is a heavy girl for hiking around the Colorado mountains.
As for the 30-06, I have to agree with you. If I was going to buy a new rifle or my first rifle, I wouldn’t even consider the 30-06. There are just too many new and old cartridges that outperform it. A 280 AI would be a perfect example. Yes the .30 cal bullet has more sectional density compared to a 7mm, but the reduction in recoil, thus reduced flinching leading to better accuracy and shot placement will always win it for me.
Nice job Garret!
While there are a number of awesome calibers now for hunting rifles; there is a reason the 30.06 has been a mainstream rifle cartridge since introduction in 1906. It flat works in the majority of scenarios a hunter will find themselves in. Anyone who is looking for a versatile and hard hitting cartridge that is proven to take Big Dangerous Game on any continent should give close consideration to the 30.06 Springfield.
Honestly, I love the newer high BC cartridges to shoot. But the 30.06 is no dog cartridge. It can shoot heavy 220gr bullets down to 55gr. express bullets and can be handloaded for many more outside this span.
A 30.06 180 Gr. Ballistic Silvertip at 496 yards will still drop an animal in one shot.
Most shooters will not even shoot past 300yds in their whole hunting career. So passing on a do everything rifle cartridge without even looking at it is a personal choice I guess still though I would always recommend a look at the 30.06 if for no other reason than to compare it with your need of a new rifle and to rule it out based on it’s use.
If I could only have one rifle then it would be a 30.06 Springfield - especially if choices became more and more limited over time.
Still, I would not rule out any rifle cartridge that is available that meets the current requirement for hunting etc…
Of course this is my opinion and it does not need to align with anyone else’s thoughts.
Know your rifle, hit your target.
Garret,
The 7mm Backcountry cartridge is based on a 30-06 Springfield case, necked down to 7mm. Created in a high-strength steel alloy case that allows magnum-level performance in a shorter, non-magnum package
Evolution of a classic.
So, even as a cartridge evolves, the old ones still remain as good or bad as they always were. The 30.06 Springfield is a great mid-range cartridge suitable for many uses with a higher sectional density than the 280 AI. The 30.06 recoil is indistinguishable from the .280 AI with very similar ballistics.
