Barrel length for new rifle

Hi all,

After a lot of research, I’m planning on ordering a carbon rogue online. I do not reload, so I am planning on 7mm Mag, or 300 win mag due to availability and price, as I already own a Tikka in .308, and want something for longer range shooting, and bigger game hunting.

Question is, what barrel length & scope setup would be best if I will be using a banish 30 suppressor (adding about 7”)? Ill likely be pairing it with a vortex razor lht 4.5-22 or Fierce has a package ready to go on sale with Zeiss V4 6-24, but the low end seems like a lot of low end zoom… Would love to hear everyone’s thoughts.

Thank you!

With the Banish 30, I wouldn’t go longer than 22” and depending on how far you going to shoot (hunt), 20” wouldn’t be too bad either.

Thank you, Ben. I was thinking 20-22 as well, so I appreciate the confirmation on that. Any opinion on optic? I like my vortex, but the Zeiss they offer has good reviews, just a 6-24 seems like a lot on the lower end

I like the vortex. I have no experience with Zeiss, but personally I never shoot anything less than 50yards and if I did, I have both eyes open I think I could figure it out.

Cool. A 7 mag would be awesome. I like a 22” for both if shooting suppressed.

For the scope, I’d probably skip the Zeiss as I believe that’s a second focal plane optic and you mentioned wanting to do long range.

The Vortex LHT is good but has the massive Achilles heel of a magnification ring that is just way way too tight. Drives me nuts because it always pulls me off the target when adjusting magnification.

In that price range, I’d go Leupold Mark 4. Or save a bunch and get an Athlon Helos, but it’s not as fancy as a Leupold Mark 4.

Awesome, thank you for the reply. I’ll take a look at those scope options.

Jim,
Do you by chance have any experience with the Eotech Vudu? I have a friend who’d sell me a barely used 5-25x50 in ffp/moa for nearly half off. Just can’t find many reviews on them, and I’d rather buy once… no huge budget concern if there’s anything else you reccomend as well, as I want to get it right the first time. Thanks again!!

So, I bought a tikka t3x in 7mm Mag a couple of years ago and it shoots very well. I also have a Zeiss V4 6-24x50 and I haven’t had issues with the 6 power zoom for close ranges. My dad has the Zeiss V4 4-16x50 and it works great for his Weatherby MeatEater in .308.
My biggest question is how far are you looking at shooting? If you aren’t shooting over 400 yards, perhaps a higher end zoom isn’t needed. Last question, are you looking for a second focal plane scope or a first focal plane? That might persuade your choice in which optic you choose.

Thank you for the reply. My typical shots in Tn are in the 75-200 yard range; however I’ll mostly use my .308 for that on white tail. This new gun will be used for a combo of longer range shooting and big game hunting out west. Prettt set on 7mm, but was looking at package builds through fierce and the zeiss was one of the options that was on a ready to go build. I prefer ffp, and didn’t realize those are 2nd. So I’m probably back to the vortex lht or something like it in ffp. Like Jim said, I dislike how hard it is to turn my magnification knob, but it’s also all I know, because it’s all I’ve had (outside of lpvo’s). So I’m open to other suggestions.

My tikka really likes the Federal Terminal Ascent 155 grain bullets. I wish I would get into reloading and I don’t have the time. It looks like the Vortex for a FFP would be a great choice. Of course there is the Leupold Mark 4 and 5, Burris Veracity, and of course many others.
What price point are you trying to stick with?

Ideally under $1500, but not an absolute; I’d rather pay a bit more, and buy right once. People seem to love leupold. May need to give those a look. I’ve heard a ton about the mark 5 and Vx 5, but not much about the mark 4. The Burris veracity gives me pause, if the battery were to die or you switch up ammo or something.

If you can afford a scope that weighs 39oz, do not pass up the Element Titan 3-18 or 5-25x56, especially if you’re doing distance. Jim reviewed it in his best scopes list, a million other YouTubers have too. I have never seen a bad review and its under $800.

Definitely went down the YouTube rabbit hole last night and did see a lot of great reviews on that one. Thanks for the recommendation.

Plus one on the Leupold M4. I also have the Arken. Can’t go wrong with either. My dime’s worth. For me, the reticle and the elevation turret are the game. Glass is hoping to find a Unicorn. What’s good enough for what I want to do is my standard.
I have 30 power 56mm objective $$ scopes. Cool but have very limited use. Find a reticle you like and turrets that track. Both the Leupold and Arken are safe bets. If you aren’t up to speed on using a real reticle, BDC reticles are “guess and press”, take some time to learn. Using the reticle to make adjustments is lightning fast. Kind of puts a grin on my face. And, no batteries to fail. Have fun !!

Glad to hear this, because I was at bass pro today and looked through a bunch, and loved the leupold Mark 4, and ordered one.

I bought a 3-18 VX6-HD. Have decided I don’t need a scope of that caliber @ 3x. I got a 6-24 in a different brand with FFP for my first time. I like it. The 6x is ok I am basically landing on a 5x for low end. And the top is limited by your budget. I am not a fan of 34mm tubes for a hunting rifle but I guess that could change as well. for me I think a 5-25 or even 20 is ok.
