Best caliber in the 90-120 gr bullet

So I am looking at buying a gun in the 90-120 gr range. I’m looking at 6 ARC, 6 creed, .243 win… what is my best option? I am just getting into reloading but I’m not confident in my abilities yet so factory ammo availability is a plus. Looking for something under $1000

At least in my neck of the woods, .243 is still more widely available (both in rifles and factory ammo selection). However, long term I like the prospect of these newer 6mm cartridges, I would like to try out a 6 CM soon. I just don’t see it that much yet.

I’ve noticed the same thing with .243 being a little more available but the 6 cm is really looking good. What rifle brand/model would you recommend?

Well, there aren’t many that have shown up on the shelves yet. I have seen a Ruger American and Savage 110 chambered for it at my local gun shop. But I think Bergara, Browning X-Bolt and the Springfield 2020 also chamber for it (will be a little more $). Christiansen, Fierce too (even more $). I would like to try a CZ 600–supposed to be a great value–but can never find them.

I’m looking at the ruger go wild and the savage 110 tactical. Downside with the ruger in my opinion is the action. I have a ruger ranch and it’s just not as smooth as I would like

For sure–between the two it’s the Savage 110 Tactical by a mile. Good rifle for the money, and probably what I will end up getting if I can’t find the CZ.

Between those options 6mm Creedmoor unless you’re looking to coalesce around a cartridge that would more readily be found in a bolt gun and a semi-auto as well… then it would be the 6 ARC.

If you were a reloader I’d say that the 6GT or a 25 Creedmoor might be a better choice with a bit better barrel life than say the 6mm Creedmoor… it’s also loaded in factory ammo from Hornady and some others too. The 6GT is only running 50fps behind the Creedmoor but is more efficient of a cartridge and guys are reporting 50-80% better match accurate barrel life using the same bullets.

At this point, I actually find more 6mm Creedmoor ammo than even 6.5 Creedmoor on shelves near me. If I wanted to add a 6mm option it would be my choice hands down… and that’s what I did when I bought a barrel for it in my switch barrel system. I had some of the same criteria - available in factory loads for decent prices for one and able to use high BC options for target shooting or smaller game hunting.

And that’s why I’m starting to lean 6 cm because I tend to find more in that caliber than in the 6.5 cm. And for what I need it to do, the 6 cm is better than the 6.5 that I currently have

I don’t think you’ll regret that decision. There’s a crazy amount of ammo from high BC match type bullets to monometal hunting bullets.

Good discussion. I would add that the 6ARC will fit an AR 15 if you want that option but it will cost velocity.

I like the idea of the ar-15 build but when I really sit down and think about it, I use my rifles more than my 5.56 ar-15. So I think a bolt action would get more use

I shoot a Uintah Precision bolt action upper on a standard lower.

I see ammo on the shelf for .243 and 6 CM regularly, but I prefer the 6 CM. those are probably your 2 best options in 6mm.
