Brian Litz on cleaning

Came across my recommended videos the other day. For some reason I was thinking he was going to be more of a Boretech person.

I’ll have to say that other than which cartridge is best, which method of cleaning best has to be the most discussed thing on the internet.

There are some good discussions on other forums. For instance some of the big guys in the Bartlein company really caution using any type of abrasives. They say they see a lot of return to barrels that were permanently damaged by their use. But then Cortina had a benchrest Hall of Famer on who said even if it is making his barrels have a significant shorter round count life, he thinks the performance Improvement is worth it.

Food for thought

It seems the answer is different based on your type of use. So there are two considerations? Barrel life and precision?
For most hunters, barrel life is a non issue even for rounds like 28 Nosler. Precision is more important but how much of a group size out of all the group size variables would be due to cleaning wear or not cleaning? If you have a 1 moa rifle - how much does that spread change with cleaning and for hunting is it a significant issue? Is it 1/10s of moa or half? And does that matter for your hunting situation? I do not know just posing some questions. If you can hit the 8 inch circle at whatever yards then it is good enough for deer? I expect a dozen other variable contribute to the solution more than cleaning techniques or even cleaning at all. If for competitive use the do everything and anything that works. Just throwing out for discussion.

Not familiar with this guy, but I am not putting bore paste in my proof barrels

He literally wrote the book.

I watched the video as well and his points made sense. I then used his process on a known accurate rifle( 6GT, benchmark barrel, 737 Impact action). The results were consistent with what was expected. Velocities were consistent and the rifle continued to make ragged holes. Time will tell on longevity. My current load is moderate and not hot. 2,960fps from 26”barrel running Berger 105 hybrids; I’m shooting for 2,000 rnds before new barrel. Mileage may vary;)

Just as with all things firearms different techniques and ideas from different disciplines.
I clean my bolt guns every 100-125 rounds. The accuracy for hunting has not diminished for me using this as a method. The main reason I clean mine, especially if I am going to be putting it up for a while, is that carbon attracts / holds moisture which can cause rust in the bore, ruining the rifling. But yeah, anything Litz takes the time to discuss is probably worth putting in your bag of knowledge. Speedy Gonzales and Eric Cortina use the paste as well; I did not until recently but I like it because it is a lot less messy than the fluid cleaners and quick to use to me. Just dont go crazy with it in the application.
