Was considering picking one of these up, but haven’t been able to find any in stock. Anyone seen or purchased one of these?
For context and maybe side discussion, I am looking to get a hunting rifle that can handle both deer and elk. I’m a newb. Some people say 6.5 prc is fine. Others say you should get 7mm Rem mag. Then I started learning about 7mm prc and I was thinking it’s kind of like an updated 7mm rem mag, I should just go with that. But the options for 7mm prc are pretty slim right now, and that’s why the x bolt SR piqued my interest. Any recs?
I literally just went through this same thing because of the shorter threaded barrels the Speed SR’s come with. I wanted the Browning 7mm PRC but ended up getting the 6.8 Western X-Bolt Speed SR instead because it recently came in stock everywhere. No idea if the 7PRC will be released any faster, but the 6.8 X-Bolt SR took almost a year to be available after they announced it. If you don’t feel like waiting, do some research on the 6.8 western. It’s a pretty flat shooter out to 500+ yards and it’s plenty of gun for Elk.
Haven’t seen any Browning XBolts in 7 PRC in the wild yet. They make good guns, but plan on buying a Tunney trigger for thr xbolt. The stock trigger is among the worst in the industry in my opinion. But once you replace the trigger, it’ll be an excellent gun.
I have a hells canyon in 270 win and it shoots lights out. Good price good dependable rifle. I did put in the mcarbo spring to drop trigger down to two lbs
Re trigger: before you take advice about plunking down a bunch of $$$ on a replacement trigger…
(1) My daughter has an x-bolt hunter in 7mm-08…she averaged 0.44 MOA [correction: 0.46] groups with the stock trigger and factory ammo.
(2) If you do want it lighter than stock, try a $12 replacement trigger spring from MCARBO before spending $$$ on a complete trigger group. (If you do get the spring, watch their youtube video “Browning X Bolt Trigger Spring Kit - Browning X Bolt Trigger Adjustment - M*CARBO”)
(3) but if you just don’t like the single stage trigger no matter the pull weight… then you’ll have to replace the trigger or just buy some other rifle.
since you’ve got more time, you could:
(1) ask a local dealer to order you one.
(2) keep checking online gun shops and sites like galleryofguns & gunbroker.
Congrats. I considered the Xbolts and think they’re a great package if the stock fits you. I was close to buying one a few years back until I shouldered one in store. The stock is just too narrow and short for me to be in a comfortable position with so I unfortunately passed on it. Looks like yours shoots great. My buddy has the LR model in 6.5. PRC. His shoots great as well for him.
I have not shot mine enough yet to say the same. Just got it in the last month. Using factory Hornady Precision ammo in the black box I was getting just over 1.5 MOA. I did order and have got some Peterson brass. Gonna do some load work up soon.
I have a X-bolt SR in a .308. I put the Mcarbo spring in it and got it down to 3-1/4" pounds, would not go any lighter. I had an X-bolt in 270 WSM, same problem, would not adjust below @ 3-1/4" pounds. I bought a Fierce Rival in 7PRC and I love the trigger on it. It came from the factory set @ 2 lbs. I have decided to sell my X-bolt .308 and get me a Fierce Rogue in .308. I like the trigger so much on the Fierce, I just went ahead and bit the bullet.
