An Army Sniper turned private instructor at my range says he trains on a 308 because that round won’t hide his flaws or make him go broke and that makes a lot of sense to me. I had already determined to do a 22 Creedmor as my next rifle but now I am wondering if I could buy a 308 (maybe a Sako 20 since I will want a little weight for a long range shooter) and buy a 224 barrel from Proof and have it Smith’d for a 22 Creedmor so I can shoot the 308 and the 22 Creed with just barrel swap.
Can I do this or am I not considering something? Thoughts?
I’d get an action that takes prefits and just go from there; if you have a barrel vise, torque wrench, and go/no-go gauges you can assemble it in your garage. If you can’t find one exactly to your liking companies like Preferred Barrel Blanks will make one to spec and send it to you (I’ve ordered several barrels from them and they’ve shot great).
This is a rifle that I assembled myself exactly that way -
This was basically my plan, but now I am trying to get 2 rifles from one. The 22 Creedmor and the 308 are so so similar in cartridge (like the 6.5 CM and 308), I thought I might be able to pull this off if it just a barrel swap.
Yep if you grab an action that takes prefits that index like the Solus does its as simple as unthreading the barrel and threading the other one on. Aero sells barreled actions in .308 for just under a thousand last time I checked, though that doesn’t come with an action wrench unfortunately.
You can also swap bolt faces on it if you want to use a magnum cartridge later.
