Choosing 6.5 Creedmoor or PRC for my 9 year old grandson

I would like to build a hunting rifle (South Texas Whitetail) for my grandson using the backfire chassis and recoil pad. I’m thinking of using a Bergara barreled action, if that’s the best route.

I can’t decide on the caliber knowing that the 6.5 creedmoor generates less recoil than the 6.5 PRC. Or do I let him grow into the PRC?

The rifle will be suppressed.

Get a cheap 6.5 creedmoor and have a decked out 6.5 prc for him to grow into… kind’of like when you shot this well, this is the prize at the end of the journey, rewards etc… as u can get a sauer 100 in 6.5 creedmoor threaded barrel for $429-ish, what’s nice about there magazines is that you can set it up to single load the rifle or use the mag, as it has 2 set points on it

I know it’s not what you asked, but is 22 creedmoor an option? I’ve hunted south Texas whitetail with it and loved it. Extremely light recoil.

But 6.5 creedmoor can work too. I’d probably not pick the 6.5prc. Too much recoil for 99% of 9 year olds.

If you hand load, then you could always get a 6.5 PRC and load up very light, 6.5 cm equivalent, rounds initially. Then as he gets older ramp it up. But if you’re stuck with Factory ammo that would not be a good option. There might be some Factory rounds out there that are very light for the PRC but I can’t swear to that right now.

I kind of like the idea that Jim just put out of the 22 creedmoor. The 6.5 cm and the 6.5 PRC are not a massive change from each other other than the recoil itself and a little bit of range increase with the prc. If you went with the 22 now then in the future when he was ready for something bigger you could take a larger leap up to a 7 mm or even 30 cal. Have more separation between the rifles in terms of capabilities.

Thank you for all the input.

I shoot a 10lbs suppressed 6.5 prc. Recoil is very mild but 10 pounds isn’t great in the woods. 6.5 creed, 22 creed would be great suppressed, light weight and plenty of killing power for whitetail.

Jim , my 11 yo grandson just informed me he wanted to go hunting with me, so do you think a 25 cm would be ok for Pig and Deer or should I just go 6.5 cm or even 7mm 08 ? Would be using break or suppressed depending on location.

25 Creedmoor is more than enough for anything except Elk and Grizzley.

Agree with Ben.

I’ve got a special place in my heart for the 7mm-08. With the right bullets and keeping ranges sensible, you’ve now also have an Elk capable rifle.

@JBF8085 - Jerry, I would recommend 6.5 creedmoor

I think I am going to go 6.5 cm, from what i am seeing it shoots great there is a lot of reload data and would give my grandson a higher success rate. now to build or to buy that is the question.

I am all in on the Build camp. I was already blading my buttstock to accommodate factory rifles. I have a short LOP. In a chassis, I can get my LOP exactly where I want it. I have my daughter’s rifle in one too and she is 5’. Not blading helped my accuracy more than anything else.
