Cleaning Rod Thread size and Length

About to order a carbon fiber cleaning rod for a new Fierce Carbon Rogue 22 inch barrel. I am looking for 40 inch but one feature is thread size that they have me select. What on earth is thread size for a cleaning rod? And is an 8-32 compatible with a 7 mm Rem Mag barrel? Really desire to keep the gun and barrel in good shape.

Thanks so much for any insights for a novice like myself.

Thread size likely relating to the jags/brushes that are attached to the end, for cleaning the bore.

Yep. Just whatever size your attachments are

I get all mine in 8-32

Thanks Ken! Very helpful!

So the thread size for cleaning rod is not connected to the size of barrel but only relates to the size attachments you connect to rod?

Apologize for my cluelessness!

The size of the cleaning rod (length) is important, as you want to have enough length to go through the action and barrel, without being impeded with smooth movement by the stock.

Diamenter of the cleaning rod itself isn’t “as” important, so long as the attachment point (8-32 in your example) supports the cleaning brushes (prefer nylon brushes personally) and the jags to attach cleaning cloths with your choice of bore cleaning solution, etc.

Yes it is for the thread size of your attachments. Glad to see your getting carbon rods

Sadly while this should be an easy answer almost all of the cleaning brush sets I have bought come in two different thread sizes. 17 and 20 caliber are 5-40 and all the rest are 8-32. so if you aren’t messing with 17 and 20 cal the answer is 8-32

I would also highly recommend a bore guide (I use Sinclair from Brownells) which adds 10" to the length or rod you need. I agree with the recommendation for 40". I like Dewey and ProShot rods and have become addicted to Parker Hale jags - also sold by Dewey.

I use BoreTech products and have had good luck with them. Everyone has their favorite vendor(s)…so do a little reading & research, find what works for you and get those guns cleaned & lubricated.

Order a set of jags from Tipton. I like brass. When you clean it can be helpful to use a jag one to two sizes smaller than the bore size so you can run the patch down the bore without getting it stuck but still remaining snug. Never clean from the muzzle but if you ordered a bore guide you probably know that.

The Tipton Jags are a little smaller than the listed caliber. If you are only running 1 patch down the barrel you should just be able to use the listed size. If you run multiple patches down then you certainly need to use a smaller size jag. Just something I learned a few weeks ago and thought I would pass on.

The patch in a baby jar trick is brilliant.

No doubt! Never knew there is so much to learn about cleaning! Great video!!

I guess it depends on the patch size because I can’t get any of my patches down the bores with my brass tiptons if I use the same size jag. I use only cloth patches though, not sure that makes a difference or not.

Interesting. Thanks for the letting me know your experiences. Patch thicknesses is certainly a part of it.

Ps. @backfire i tried to use the word f.e.e.d.b.a.c.k and it wont let me. Wtf

That was a good video. Thanks.

I cant say enough about how good the Bore Tech products are. Best I have ever used and my wife doesn’t complain about the smell.
