- Is road hunting really hunting?
- Carbon Fiber Barrels – are there not any that work as advertised? I mean the claim is they shunt heat from the barrel.
- Heavy Cartridge with light rifle, agreed! It is not a good combination and will never really be a precision shooter. Still if you shoot it enough you can get decent hunting accuracy – maybe just under 1 inch at 100 yards.
- Vertical grip versus traditional angle grip – it depends on how you like to shoot. Vertica grips can get in the way of some shooting positions. Traditional grips may not be as sexy as current vertical grip rifles but there is a reason they remain in use.
The reason for larger scope tube sizes above one inch (i.e., 30mm and 34mm) is to offer more space for the internal mechanisms to adjust windage and elevation, allowing for greater accuracy at range.
• Scopes based on a 1-inch tube provide a good balance of weight and functionality and are most often used for short to midrange hunting (50-375 yards).
• Scopes based on 30mm and 34mm tubes: Offer a scope with wider adjustment range over the 1-inch tube scopes, very useful for long-range and precision shooting.
• Objective lens size:
Larger objective lenses increase the scope’s overall size and weight and, in my opinion, only needed for longer distance shooting. Still, they have a cool factor and are very popular.
First Focal Plane (FFP) Scopes versus Second Focal Plane (SFP) Scopes.
I like both; and I use both for different purposes. My SFP scope is truly hunting only scope and it weighs in at about 16oz. It is not only lighter than any FFP scopes I own, but also accurate and durable.
My FFP scopes are my long-range shooting scopes and the glass on them is phenomenal. But they are 21-28oz. It may not seem like a lot, but it adds up quickly.
