Just starting out and bought most things off of Jim’s immediate reloading list. I noticed he said not to even worry about cleaning brass. I have about 80 rounds for Hornady that I planned on using to get started. So when I screw something up it’s no loss. So the questions:
Trim first then deprime with the die and resize at the same time? Not sure if that’s how it works. I’m going back to rewatch Jim’s courses.
Powder suggestion for 18 inch 7prc? H1000 seems one of the most popular but wondering if anyone had similar barrel length and had success with something else.
Trim after resizing, and only if needed. ( although there are plenty of people out there who will trim with every reloading)
H1000 is a great powder for 7 PRC but it’s probably going to be a bit slow for an 18 inch barrel.
Never seen a 7 PRC with that short of a barrel. What kind of velocities are you getting now?
I am extremely new to reloading so take that in consideration. From what research I have done, like many things in life you’ll find differing opinions on different parts of the process such as brass cleaning. However, there are other parts you’ll want to be strict about such as grains of powder.
What I have done, is deprime the cases, washed the brass wet with pins (debatable), annealled the brass (debatable), sized the brass full length (some only neck size), you would then measure to see if you need to trim the necks. if you have not resized the brass very much then you’ll likely not need that step.
The most critical step when you start out is to use a published case/bullet/powder recipe. The hornady app or book is a good place to start. If you don’t want to invest in one at this point I’ll gladly give you a screen shot from my book so I don’t type it out incorrectly.
I know others much more experience than I am will chime in, but I wanted to give you my perspective from a new hand loader same as you are.
Right now 2679, only has 20 rounds through it so guess it will speed up some.
Also don’t know if a can will help or not with speed but I haven’t added it yet.
What weight of a bullet?
The can Will have a positive, but very minimal impact on velocity.
175 eld-x, plan on trying other ammo but haven’t had enough time at the range yet.
You’d want to trim after depriming and resizing.
H1000 is a good choice. Reloder26 is the golden powder for 7prc, but it’s unobtanium.
Are these dies correct? One say 7prc and the other says 7mm rem mag. Just ordered them off of midway.
If you have a 7 PRC, then only use 7 PRC dies. 7 Rem Mag is a completely different chambering.
What I figured
I am also new to reloading, and am starting a load development for my 7mm prc (26” Outlier barrel) I started watching a video series on you tube from Little Crow Gunworks, and it is pretty informative and interesting, but long about 13 videos.
H1000 is one of the powder’s I’ll be testing also.
I also have an 18 inch 7 PRC topped with an 8 inch suppressor. My best load is H1000 with WLR primers and 168 gr LRx Barnes bullets averaging around 2850 FPS. This about what I would expect to be max for velocity. I also tried N570 with decent results. I used GRT to help evaluate load max.
175 ABLR bullets were not great for this barrel.
Thats for the info, I am just starting to work up a load for this one. I was planning on starting with H1000 but haven’t evaluated yet in GRT.
Is GRT showing a 100% burn with that load?
Carter,
I will have to go back and look but I think so. Here is a photo of my 200 yd target with 10 shots.
Very nice!
I also have a 168 lrx load using H1000. I don’t have the load data in front of me right now but I know I’m loading above what Hodgdon lists as their Max but below what Barnes lists as their Max load.
I’m getting 2860, but that’s out of a 22 inch barrel so a bit slower than what you’re getting. However it’s a very accurate load.
When I created it, I did not own grt. Recently I went back into GRT and plugged in my info and looks like I’m getting 101% case fill, which I do believe because I do feel a crunch when seating the bullet, and only about a 92 to 93% burn rate.
But I really don’t think I’m going to go back and do anything different because I like the way the load works so well in terms of accuracy.
I should have stated its over book max but I have no pressure indicators and I know others have reported using higher charges and getting close to 3000 FPS, even more than mine. I haven’t loaded it in a year but I don’t recall what %fill rate was. I am using Peterson brass.
I use Retumbo
If you like playing around with GRT plug in VV N555. I’ve gotten some really accurate loads using Barnes LRX 160 gr. bullets. I know it’s a relatively fast powder for 7 PRC but I’m getting burn out very close to end of my 22” barrel. Like Barnes recommends it didn’t get accurate until I was pretty far off the lands.
