Custom bolt action guns

Hey Jim, a few years ago, I bought an MDT chasse to build a custom bolt gun for precession shooting and hunting. I have been looking to get it finished, I have seen your 7 PRC that you have done. Do you have any recommendations on where to get the bolt receiver? I have do a generic google search, but I haven’t a decent action doing that. Any recommendations would be great! I am just getting into the shooting and hunting world so I feel like I am in over my head, but I am up for the challenge.

Sounds like a fun project. Do you mean the bolt face? When you get your action, you’d just get one with the bolt face for the prc cartridges.

I was originally planning on doing a .308 or something similar. I have only ever bought things from a dealer, however not many stock bolt action receivers. I currently hunt with a savage 110, and that is my only bolt action experience. I just want to make sure I order a decent receiver that has a smooth action, and is fairly inexpensive. How do I go about ordering a bolt action receiver, and what companies make decent actions at a reasonable price? I just don’t know what it out there or how to order it. I dont know if that makes sense, I just dont know where to start to get the bolt its self.

The cheapest and easiest way is to buy a tikka action, they are probably the smoothest factory action out there and are fairly cheap. Also the tolerance on the action is so tight that a lot of companies sell precut barrels that are already chambered. All you have to do is screw the barrel on to the torque spec and your good to go.

You might talk to Preferred Barrel Blanks about this. They can point you to where to buy the action, and put a barrel on there for you. So you’d get the barreled action sent to your FFL. That’d make it a lot easier.

I really like the defiance Anti action, but prices on those have skyrocketed. Faxon is making component actions that are great, but only short action.

So the next option would be to find a donor action, like a tikka as described above, and then getting a prefit barrel done for your tikka action that you could screw on yourself.

To my knowledge, there’s nowhere to buy component tikka actions, so it’d be a matter of hitting the pawn shops and just finding a cheap tikka that you can harvest it’s organs.

You can get tikka actions from this website and a few more. I think brownells sells them as well. Hope this helps you out.

This is another good website if you already have a tikka action these guys sell a kit to fully upgrade your tikka. Seems like a sweet option that I might have to try in the future.
