Hey folks, family member just picked up a CVA cascade in 308 for hunting elk/deer based on Jims Rifle comparison article.
Anyone have some factory ammo recommendations that group well in this rifle? Not match rounds, but hunting specific. I know the main ones like eld-x and bondstrikes, but would love to hear what worked for everyone here. Especially if you have group data or pictures
General hunting distances, sub-400 and something that will be effective on game to include muleys, elk, and bear.
Here is some group data (I have a log book I keep but I donβt take pictures)
Hornady Am. Whitetail 150 gr: 0.79 average group, best group 0.60
Remington Core Lokt Tipped 150 gr: 1.70 average group, best group 1.02
Nosler Accubond 150 gr: 0.94 average group, best group 0.76
Barnes TTSX 150 gr: 0.64 average group, best group 0.45
Federal Premium Berger Hybrid 165 gr: 1.05 average group, best group 0.71
This is only based on a handful of 3-shot groups with each brand, usually 3 or 4 groups gives me a good idea. I still have more to test with this but if I were to take it hunting tomorrow Iβd reach for either the Barnes TTSX or the Hornady Whitetail (which surprised me).
I did not record the data like Alex did, but I can tell you that I had similar results in my Carbon Rogue .308 with an 18" barrel. It shot the Barnes 150 grain TTSX, the Federal Premium Terminal Ascent 175 grain, and the Berger Hybrid Hunter 168 grain very well. They all shot 1/2" groups or better. Other ammo it tried included the Hornady 150 grain and 180 grain American Whitetail, Federal Premium Barnes TSX 150 grain, which shot well also, and the Hornady 150 grain CX bullet. But like I mentioned above, the Barnes 150 grain TTSX and the Federal Premium 175 grain Terminal Ascent did the best.
Attached is a picture of the Federal Premium 175 grain Terminal Ascent bullet that I retrieved from just under the hide on the opposite shoulder of a deer I harvested a couple of weeks ago.
300 Win Mag Cascade I went through a lot of different ammo and found two loads that work well in my Cascade Federal Trophy Copper 180g .450 groups, Sig Sauer Platinum Hunter 180g accubond .503 groups.
