CVA Feeding Problem

Hey guys, hope everyone is well.

Just checking to see if any of you have had the issue I’m facing with a CVA Cascade (or any other rifle for that matter). Based on so many positive reviews of the CVA Cascade, I bought one in 6.5 PRC just before Christmas, but didn’t get a chance to shoot it till yesterday. Good news is that it shot and seemed to group well. But, the bad news is that it had MAJOR feeding problems.

When I would load 3 rounds into the magazine, the first round would load just fine. It’s when I tried to load the second round that the problem came. After the first shot, when I open the bolt, the last two rounds in the magazine release. If I open the bolt slowly, it releases the last two rounds and simply tries to load two rounds at once. If I open the bolt fast, both of the last two rounds come flying out of the top of the action along with the spent case. It’s nuts. So in short, no matter what I do, I can’t chamber a second round when shooting. At first I thought that perhaps the bolt was just really dirty or something. But I got it home and cleaned it well and the problem was still there.

I think this is a malfunction with the magazine, but I’m not sure. Even though 6.5 PRC is a short action cartridge, the CVA uses a long action for this cartridge. It seems like the magazine is just too long. I don’t know.

I tried to call CVA today, but they are closed so I’ll call Monday. For now, any of you guys have this problem or have any thoughts?

As always, thanks for the help!

Sorry to hear that. I haven’t had issues with CVAs feeding. I think you’re right that it sounds more like a magazine issue than the gun so hopefully they’ll be able to fix it quickly.

Thank you, sir!

I had that issue with my Cascade I called CVA then sent me a replacement. Seems some of their magazines have a spring issue.

Yeah, they have some issue with the mags for sure, but not all the mags. Let me say that I’ve owned 2 CVAs so far and they are incredibly accurate guns. The mag they use for the 6.5 PRC seems to be some one-sized fits several cartridge types that simply doesn’t work for the 6.5 PRC. They sent several mags to me and they all had that problem. I finally sent the rifle to them and they said they couldn’t get it fixed on their end so they offered me a replacement rifle in a different caliber. I ended up with a 7mm PRC. Thankfully, it does not have this problem and is also incredibly accurate. So, I ended up as a satisfied customer even though it didn’t work out with their 6.5 PRC.

I just bouggt a CVA XT in 6.5prc, havnt shot it yet but I cycled the mag loaded with 3 rounds 10 times no issues smooth feed.

That’s awesome that yours isn’t having the feeding issue we had, because my 6.5 PRC was so accurate. I loved it, but just couldn’t get it to feed right. If your’s is working properly you will love that gun! If I recall, mine specifically liked the Berger Elite Hunter and the Hornady ELD-X.

Anyway, enjoy that gun!
