@backfire Jim, is there some sort of itinerary? Like day one for rifle shooting course and day two for hunt and processing? I need to figure out how many days to get a hotel room. Are you going to be there? It would be awesome to meet you in person if I don’t get star struck😍.
What does the shooting part consist of? I would like to nail down particulars.
Thanks
It’s a one-day hunt and shoot. So we’ll go to the range in the morning and shoot long range for a couple hours and then go shoot the bison and cut it up on the spot, put it in your truck, and you can head out whenever you like.
I’ll be there the whole time. Looking forward to getting (very) bloody again. Last time I looked like an axe murderer by the end of the day.
Will be fun to meet you!
Perfect. Thanks.
Reminds me of a moose hunt I had. I stripped down to white t-shirt before field dressing it. It was full length of arms to chest to get to top of liver and lungs and pus out what seemed like a 100 lbs of stuff. I looked like an axe murder when I took the moose to the little town for butchering. I got a few looks.
@backfire A hotel in the area recommended? I assume Tremonton.
We only found rooms at the Motel 6 last time and it was absolutely disgusting. Gonna try something different this time but not sure where.
definitely not a motel 6 fan
Got a room at Best Western in Logan.
Looks like I will need that bison hide to keep warm!
Forecasting single digits in the mornings of the hunts.
Great time today. Awesome meeting Jim and Tate and others in person. Weather was perfect. And some adventure to it. Much harder than just driving up an pulling the trigger at short range. As expected the love of hunting was a common thread for all there and a nice group of people to do this with. Tate and his crew are top notch. Bison hump roast for Christmas dinner! Should be awesome. Retirement is off to a great start.
So much better than a cruise, right?
11.5 hrs door to door - Logan to Salem. Love the 80 mph speed limits. Left at 3am home by 1:30 pm. 20’s and 30’s temps all the way home - with not much fog. Meat nice and cold the whole trip. I had bags of ice on a tarp over the meat in bags and the ice did not melt for the trip. Tomorrow the work begins.
Ok not complaining but cutting up a bison by yourself is a task. I have grinding left to do. I would be interested in what others got for finished weight.
I will have mine soon.
Good question on packaged weight. Mine was mixed bags with elk so I didn’t get my weight.
Listened to the podcast today. A real treat to be there. Watching the bison charge the first group after watching them was unreal. I thought I am 65 and what did I get into. I am not going to be able to run all over the field like they did. And sitting on the berm not knowing what was going on with the shooter. I think they were correct in that the temp was slowing the firing pin. Can’t imagine it being anything else except dirt but that seems more unlikely. All of the confusion about the shooting the coyotes and the herd being gone upset my plan and I made a disappointing mistake. I had three rifles in my truck. One was my 300 WM which you all saw the nice whitetail I shot with it a couple weeks prior. The plan was we would split and some of us would go to the range and hunt later. I wanted to check my 7prc at the range. I did check it at the local range the week before. But I do not have much time on that rifle. I have killed more than a dozen animals with my 300 single shot. The plan did not go to plan and no range time. But I still chose the 7 in the last minute as we were all hopping in fewer truck to get to the bison. So my first shot from a tripod, Tate said was low. Now low on a bison is a probably 2 ft? I raised to top of the hump and it sailed over. Not good. Another person offered his rifle - thanks for that - and in the heat of the moment I used his. I did kill mine with one shot with that rifle. So in the end a good shot on the animal. The 300prc was deadly but one shot I did not have my ears plugged and it rocked me. Right ear is still having weird sounds. It had a muzzle brake and it would have knocked over a kid from the blast. My own fault but ouch. All in all lots of fun and plenty of excitement. Exceeded my expectations for the adventure of a ranch shoot for sure.
PS headed to range today to figure out the 7prc. Still wondering why being newly retired why I do not have more time to get to these things? Of course it is winter in Oregon and while it is not 18 it does rain - a lot. But today is nice with a temp of 50 degree sunshine.
Great hunt report. Was great to meet you.
Did you guys film this hunt? If so, when do you plan to post it?
We didn’t. Just a couple shorts.
Not sure what is better or worse. The 7prc was on target as I expected. So user error? I guess so. I am not a novice pulling the trigger on game kind of pressure shooting an animal with 10 people watching. But I had no issues using the other rifle. So I do not know.
