This was Saturday shooting the same ammo (same lot of factory ammo) with the same GSL Multi-Cal suppressor attached.
I did make sure that both the brake and the suppressor were tightened down correctly. I’m debating either to try 150 grain or 175 grain projectiles, but I don’t quite understand what is going on.
Very odd. I know you said everything was tightened down but seriously that’s the only thing I can think of that would make that big of a difference. Pie plate accuracy just won’t change by altering the bullet weight. Something else is happening.
LOL absolutely!!! No “Mossberg” markings. I checked the torque on everything that I know to check. Action screws (55), scope base (30), scope rings (18), muzzle brake (30), and suppressor (QD). Is there anything that I missed?
A damaged crown can cause extreme flyers / groups opening up. The only other thing I have experienced real difficulty with in solving a poorly grouping rifle was improper contact between the action lug and the stock; the lug was touching at the bottom and acting as a “see-saw” pivot point between the action and the rest of the barrel.
Years and years ago my dad and is car guy buddies were standing around trying to diagnose why the new engine they just put in my dad’s friend truck wouldn’t start. They checked everything… until at last some one asked in the plugs were new. They weren’t. My dad said if I was there I would have asked about the plugs right away because that was about the extent of my diagnostic knowledge.
Lesson I learned is that sometimes the great minds miss the easy answer. So I will be the guy who asks the basic question: did you check your parallax?
Yes sir, I did check the parallax and it was good. I love that story because it reminds me of something that my Dad and his shade tree mechanics would have done and said!
Check the bases on the action, I had a 7RM work loose on me this past deer season and my groups spread out significantly. Took off the scope and the base and put some loctite on the base screws. Lastly, and I think it would be the long shot but a bad lot of ammo is not out of the realm of possibility. Long, long time ago, I bought a box of Swift Scirrocos loaded in factory ammo…the groups in my 308 were 8-10-12 inches. I put them away and never bought another box. A bad batch of bullets, with an imbalance in the copper jacket could give a similar result.
