Does anyone swap barrels?

I need some input from the community. I have been thinking about having multiple barrels with different chamberings for a rifle using the same bolt. Example would be 30-06 & 25-06 or 6.5 PRC and 300 WSM. 1 action/stock & 1 scope, 2 rifles.

Do any of you do this and if so do you recommend it as a good way to have high quality rifles for a little less dent on the checking account?

Thanks

It’s popular to do this in Europe where some countries have restrictions on the number of firearms an individual can own.

Personally, I think it’d end up costing MORE money to do this because each time you switch barrels, it’s gonna cost you $60 in ammo to get perfectly sighted in again.

I’m looking at the Seekins Havak HIT for this very purpose. They have a much simpler quick charge system that anyone with a screwdriver can utilize. My vision is one action and chassis. Just change out barrels and know the dope to get each barrel close to the bullseye. Maybe have extra turrets with turret tags ready to go. Or have barrel/scope combos to switch out.
@backfire have you ever done a review of the Havak HIT or HIT Pro? I don’t recall seeing one.

Ben,
Take a look at Sauer 505 XT titanium (it comes in three different packages and this is the least expensive of them all) 6.5 Prc 24" $3200.
Then additional barrels they offer are:
300 WM 24" $1300,
7mm 24" $1300,
375 H&H 24" $1300.
They just introduced it this year and started distributing it in the Q4 2024.
Eurooptic.com is one of the distributors.
I, myself, looking at this as well, but the “Synchro” model.
Desert Tech models are all modular, but all are semi and cost a lot more.
All the reviews are positive.
Good luck.

I saw that. I think I would more interested in version 2 or 3 when it comes to something that new. I do t like spending that much and the system isn’t tried and true. Great concept though.

I have been trying to talk myself into a Sig Cross 308 with the 16” barrel as it’s on a chassis and I could buy a 22 CM barrel and have all kinds of fun over a Ruger American Gen 2 ranch in the same. The Sig is just double the price for essentially the same accuracy and size rifle. I have only one use for a 16” rifle so that kinda of the thinking towards the Sig, make it more useful

I’m not familiar with the 505’s specifics, yet. But Sauer has been doing switch barrels since the 202 was introduced. So they know how to do it right.

Aren’t the new Sako 100’s switch barrel rifles?

The Terminus Zeus action claims to have quick change with a return to zero. So does the Barrett MRAD.

Beretta BRX1 barrel swapping kits: $650 for barrel, bolt face, and magazine. There are videos on youtube showing how it is done. Different approach, but the rifle gets good reviews, starts at 1500.00, 20 inch barrel, threaded, handy. May be an option.

Yes. That is correct. SAKO’s new 100 is also a modular rifle. EuroOptic is also taking orders for this rifle as well. It is in about the same price range as the Sauer 505.
I am not familiar with earlier Sauer models, but i wouldnt be surprised if their 404 didn’t have that.
its safety features, it is absolutely unbelievable.Especially even with a blocked barrel. The other impressive thing about this rifle is the wood grade, just gorgeous ( I am partial to wood in rifles and shotguns.) But for what Ben is looking for, not practical with the price tag and being the introductory models in both cases.

I am running a zermatt tl3 action with trigger tec diamond and proof carbon prefit barrels. Action wrench and barrel vice and 10 mins later i am shooting a different gun. Currently shooting 6.5PRC, 300 WSM and 6mm Creed for prs. The TL3 can change bolt faces for 125 per. All short action of course. I really love this setup as once sighted in i record the changes on my scope. Also running a mpa matrix chassis and a mdt hnt26 for hunting. For me its more cost effective than having 3 guns and 3 scopes. Also run break or silencer depending on what i am doing. This all requires some adjustment in sighting, but so does elevation, temp etc. Extremely accurate in all calibers

How much did it all that come out to?

Action 1400 , trigger 290, barrels at 900 ea, extra bolt face, 125, chassis ~1400 ea, mpa scope mount 300, razor gen 3 scope 6x36 you can find the deals, break or can your choice. I am running a mpa break or a bannish 30 can. Note that chassis prices are a broad range dependant on what you like. I am left handed so this lets me shoot a quality setup with sub 1/2 inch moa accuracy. Dont forget the backfire butpad! Got that on the HNT26 and love it. My lightweight is around 9.5 lbs and compitition is about 14 lbs.

As an addon if you choose one chassis and action initioa cost is abetween 3 and 4k. Then its a 900 barrel and the proof carbon are shooting lights out for me. Going from a mag face to a 308 based bolt face is only 125 more. I have stuck wit short action calabers which work for me. Those chasing long action need to do their own research on flexability of builds…

I live in the UK and hunt(stalk) in the UK, Europe and Africa. I use a Schultz and Larsen Ambassador rifle. It is a switch barrel rifle. I have two barrels for it, 7 x 64 and 8 x 57. I also have two scopes each is set up for the two calibre combinations.

I have found that when I swap a barrel and scope the shift in zero is so small as to make no difference. I do not have to rezero when I swap calibre and the swap can be carried out in 3 or 4 minutes. So there are no costs to zero once the barrel and scope combo has been set up.

The cost however is in the second scope and rings.

The cost for a setup like this is roughly ÂŁ2500 for a complete rifle and ÂŁ1000 for the second barrel then the cost of a pair of scopes and rings.

These two calibres use the same bolt and magazine so not too diffficult to make the swap. The problems arise when the two barrels are for calibres that require a different magazine length and bolt. It can be embarrassing and really frustrating when you arrive at the hunt with a rifle with the incorrect bolt!
