Does anyone on here have experience with hunting with the Hornady Match ammo? I recently bought a Fierce MTN Reaper in 7mm prc and it LOVES the Hornady Match ammo. I was curious if anyone has experience with the match bullets on game. I’m in Arizona primarily hunting Mule Deer and Elk. Shots from 400-600 yards are very common.
Well, couple things to clarify.
- Match Ballistic Tip - like the ELD M is not the same as the BTHP bullet
- Match BTip ELD M has a thinner jacket, than say the ELD X, so it will fragment quicker, may not penetrate as well.
- For Whitetail deer I would shoot the ELD M without a second thought; they are more destructive on meat, but kill effectively. I shot deer with the Hornady AMAX almost exclusively for the last 15 years and it has never failed to penetrate and kill an animal; but again, hard on the meat. Using the ELD M now for the better BCs.
- If the ELD X shoots within 1 MOA consistently, that is probably the better choice for hunting.
- Jim and others here have shot multiple larger animals (elk) or know someone who has with both bullets and can give you better first hand knowledge.
Good luck and welcome to the forum.

Good question. I’ve done it and it did work. Some people love using match bullets in exactly this situation where it’s just what the gun shoots well.
I’d just be cautious on shot placement and I think it can work fine.
I showed the result of hunting with a match bullet here https://youtu.be/8yCddWv62Ig?si=ujm9w5I5uXJdebSK
Specific to the 7 PRC, I just saw my friend John McAdams did a video testing the match bullet in ballistics gel. https://youtu.be/4knJ5s-heG4?si=XokXD9gTdw5JxqO1
