Expander Mandrel

Hey Jim,

Can you give us a little more information on expander mandrels?

I see you purchased the 21st century black nitride mandrel. I’m trying to understand the difference between the 7MM black nitride mandrel and the caliber specific mandrels. Would caliber specific be more accurate because you can measure the size of your case neck with a loaded bullet and get exactly 2 thou of neck tension? In other words, is the black nitride mandrel more generic?

How did you setup your die body? Does it come with instructions?

Finally, if I’m reloading for my 7MM PRC, which die would you purchase? See my screenshot below.

Thanks a ton!

I was just looking at the same thing yesterday and couldn’t decide. What did you end up buying?

I just bought standard black nitride. One for each major caliber of bullet. Neck tension is not one of the variables that I customize on my ammo. I really just want it to be the same every time, so I use the expander mandrel.

Setting up the die is super easy. You just chuck the mandrel in and screw the top closed. Then start hammering brass. You don’t even have to get it to a specific setting at all. You can just feel when the mandrel slips over the mandrel and you stop pressing there.

Once you get it and use it once, you’ll see it’s really simple.
