Experiences with Hammer and CX's?

I’m pretty satisfied with the performance I’ve had from Factory loaded TTSX & LRX bullets. So I really don’t have a big impetus to change.

But see now that Weatherby is loading some Hammer bullets for the 280 AI.

Any personal experience with the hammer bullets? How is their terminal performance? While we’re at it and talking about copper bullets how about the Hornady cx? I really don’t see many discussions online about people using them.

I’ve also had great luck with the LRX and both elk I shot dropped where they were at. I used the GMX twice and had similar results so I can only imagine that the CX is also going to perform well as long as the conditions are right. I personally like Barnes better so like you I also don’t see any need to change bullets for what I shoot. I’ve seen several comparisons between Barnes, Hornady, and Nosler lead free ammo and the Barnes always seem to be the most consistent even at lower impact velocities.

No personal experience with Hammers but many users of them seem to get borderline “religious” about them. I guess my only issue with them as a company is how much of there marketing is dedicated to “tearing down” competitors versus focusing on their design strengths. I’m sure they work but there are a lot of strange instances of heavily edited videos and removed videos that a few people on YouTube campaign against.

I’m not sure if any of it is to be taken seriously completely but what I will say is that within the designed purpose I’m sure their bullets are effective… and usually overly marketed hype should all be taken with a grain of salt.

I haven’t been convinced on the ballistics of hammer bullets. When watching video, they have a crazy bullet trace which makes me wonder about the aerodynamic properties. Plus, the box and website advertises only BCs based on drop, which makes me wonder if they’ve even shot them on radar for testing.

Not saying they are bad. I have limited experience with them. I’m just saying I haven’t been convinced to give them a closer look.

I think that’s what a lot of critics are questioning. Their videos have been heavily edited on YouTube and lately they’ve removed many “in the name of free speech.” In reality though I’ve seen them re-edit and repost the same video up a few times. One of the videos was pretty suspect and possibly illegal where the shooter clearly shot an animal and wounded one behind it that he didn’t account for on the original video. On subsequent edits they clearly moved the collateral animal out of the frame and it was a young animal for sure.

In any case they are a sponsor on most of the major firearms/hunting forums so any criticism is usually met with group think attacks or an outright removal of the post/ban of the person calling performance into question. So “free speech” doesn’t actually matter to most people when they don’t agree with the message… but like most areas most people are complete hypocrites on that matter.

Barnes 165 gr .308 ttsx at 300
yards from a 300WM into a rag horn bull.

It did not penetrate the hide on far side.
Nice expansion at that distance. I am a fan of the Barnes bullets - I do use their factory loads.
I am going to try the 160 cx in my 7mm prc but haven’t got to it yet for accuracy. sigh… I need to retire.

Tell me about it! (retirement)

Look forward to seeing what you think about the cx. I don’t know if you’re aware but there’s a YouTube channel from the Little Crow Gun Works where they are going to be testing the 160 CX in four different 7 mm chamberings to see which one works the best. Apparently they like the cx.

I have seen that. It does take a while for him to get them out. And he said he was not going to publish his cx loads. So the exercise is left up to the student. As in other threads on 7prc I would like to see what the velocities will be with the cx. Besides retirement we need it to stop raining every weekend in Western Oregon. But that is why we have green grass and big trees so can’t complain too much.
