Favorite coyote caliber

I’m a die hard coyote hunter and just wanted to see if anyone else like to hunt the hunter and what there favorite set up might be?

Usually a 223 does the job for me but hunting in east texas i dont have as many opportunities for 150+ yard shots so not too worried about payload on target. if im feeling like i may have a longer shot i find myself bringing out the trusty 243

I’m using 22-250 and really like it, but I think if I were buying today, I’d probably go with 243 or 6 creedmoor. They’re more versatile for hunting other animals as well.

6.5 Grendel in an AR platform is fun!

I have a few .223 bolt action and AR style rifles. My favorite rifle for predator hunting is a 221 Fireball. I have had no luck hunting with it yet. I also have a 218 Bee which has proven itself very accurate that I can’t wait to smoke a song dog with.

I LOVE the 22-250…flat screamer and handles the dogs great…

I love the 22-250 also. Hard to argue with velocity like that but 90 % of the dogs I shoot are under 100 yards and I love to keep the hides. Are the hides you shoot torn bad?

I would go 6mm creedmoor. You won’t have any run offs and they just shoot extremely flat. Plus you can use it as a deer rifle as well.

22-250 for the win! Knock down power is amazing when smoking yotes.

But how is the pelt damage when you call one in close?

I already have a 240 Weatherby mag who’s is about 400 fps faster then the creedmore. That gun is just a flat out killer. Never shot another cartridge that kills deer faster. I know it would be a great long range coyote gun with spectacular kills but the hides would be turned inside out. Was considering the 6mm ARC though just for a fun gun to shoot.

they haven’t been torn up at all really…the dogs are pretty hefty in eastern washington and some of it is predation control and depending on season, they are pretty shaggy looking and not really worth the hide so in short, it just kind of depends…

You got me looking. Trying to go light weight. Was very close to buying a Christenson arms 22-250 it’s like five pounds. Not as young as I once was so shaving pounds to be able to carry more stuff. Lol

Many will work but in standard cartridges I’d choose 6mm Creedmoor/243 Win, 6 ARC, 25-06, or 22-250. If you’re a hand loader the 25 Creedmoor or 22 Creedmoor seem interesting.

I hunt with the 22-250 of course but I am in the market for a 220 swift. Haven’t been able to find a new one. I think the only manufacturer that produces one in that caliber is Remington and I’m not sure they have had a run of them since they got sold off. Need to do some more research. I think the 6 Creedmore is a fine coyote round as well.

220 swift is a awesome round. I have been looking for one for years.
