Backstory:
I have a new barrel on my 30-06 and have done the go no go gauges to make sure the barrel is seated correctly and the action is correct.
At the range, the firing pin, which prior to the barrel swap worked fine, puts good little dimple in the primer, but not as deep as it should. No fire.
Can we see a pic of the dimpled primer? Wondering if it’s super light and not hitting the primer, or if it looks more normal and is firing the primer but maybe something else is the issue.
I admit to thinking something was weird with my rifle this week only to realize I forgot to put powder in 5 cases
Have you looked at the firing pin to make sure it doesn’t have carbon build up? This could impede the force of the contact. I had this and cleaned the pin which corrected the problem.
Have you tried to fire the same box of ammo in a different rifle? I have gotten a box of hornady ammo where I ran into multiple non-firing rounds in a box of 50. They would go on a second attempt to fire; have never had that happen again but it could be “that box”.
I only have this 30-06, so I haven’t trued in a different rifle. I only brought that one box to the range as I was just sighting in a new scope. I will try a different box before I go to the smith.
I haven’t checked the firing pin protusion depth, but thanks for that thought. I will.
I haven’t checked for carbon build up either, but will.
Usually the troubleshooting process for something like this is -
Ammo/primers issue? - check a different brand/lot of ammo
Firing pin issue? - check protrusion and function, afaik you can adjust this on a savage action
Firing pin spring issue? - check spring and replace (https://www.gunsprings.com/SAVAGE/110/cID2/mID54/dID247)
5 minutes fix at the gunsmith. Not sure what the piece is called but there is hex bolt on the back bolt and too loose. Smithy tightened and it goes bang again.
