I have a gun safe and I’m not even close to half the long gun capacity and it’s full. What are you guys doing to organize them to fit more? Or should I be looking at doing a room instead?
I’m in the same boat. Once you put on a scope, it’s tough to get to even 1/3 of the stated capacity of a safe, unless you’re shoving them in there with no care of them scraping up against eachother. My next move is a fun room/gun closet with a Safe style door.
You have to remove the optics and even the bolts to get the most out of the safe’s storage space. I use a top shelf that spans the safe to store the bolts and have a separate cabinet for scopes.
Taking the bolts out would be ok. I don’t know about taking scopes off. I like to grab and go at times. I looked at the gun rods and seems like a good idea till you want the back gun a it takes you a hour to get to it.
I have found it helpful to sometimes stack some rifles with the butt pad on the ground, and then stack other rifles next to them with the muzzle on the ground, with something to protect it. This helps a little bit but the big thing as mentioned above is scopes.
I don’t particularly love Picatinny rails with mounts for hunting rifles. It gives an extra place for failure to occur and can make the entire system quite tall. But, the ability to take the scope off and store it separately is a huge advantage.
If I could have designed the house that we moved into I would have designed it with a secure Gun Room and just forgotten all about gun safes all together
Yeah, I tried a few gun safes and they never have anywhere near the listed capacity in a practical use. Eventually built a gun room which was a big undertaking and overkill for most but I’m grateful to have it.
