I am looking for a gun safe that is fireproof rated that would be able to hold 24 long guns. I am FRUSTRATED when looking online…every company that I have visited their 24 gun safes hold 5-6 long guns and the rest are for pistols.
What would you recommend for me? It needs to be less than 44 inches wide and not crazy expensive or heavy (I’m not as young as I once was).
So I share your frustration and angst!!!
What I am discovering is that if you need a safe for say 24 rifles, you need to look for one that can hold 48 rifles (2x quoted need).
I would also suggest that you look for a vendor that can deliver AND install… TO the location you desire.
Now, the question I have for you is this: Do you really have 24 rifles to put in your vault OR are you looking forward and adding capacity based on future need? (note: Having as many rifles as you afford is awesome; just clarifying actual need! I wish my wallet could support my desires [LOL])).
Between my son and I we have 26 long rifles, with more to come. My father passed away recently and his collection will be divided between myself and my 2 sisters. He had a nice collection as well
As mentioned above, if you’re looking at scoped rifles you need to look for a safe with at least twice the capacity of what you have. If you’re looking to own AR style rifles or any rifle with a pistol grip on top of an optic, more like three or even four times the capacity.
Having rifles with detachable Scopes can help.
That is a solid cache!! You are likely going to find yourself buying either one large safe…or two-three smaller safes where you can put rifles of similar ilk together (scoped vs. non-scoped, etc.)
Good insight into gun safes.
Thank you for posting this. Just in time. B/c I am also in the market for one or two, and what I had seen out there at a couple of ‘Safe’ companies were mostly ‘Sales’ safes and I thought some were expensive till I read this article and got a jolt of reality on how much an actual “Safe” safe costs. But now I adjusted my expectations of how much a ‘real’ safe (Bank or Jewelry safes) cost and adjust my finances to afford one. Thanks.
I like Liberty safes. But they are not inexpensive or easy to move. My only advice is to buy a larger one than you need now. Over time you will need a larger one. It’s just the way it seems to work out. Good luck!
As said the safe capacity number is not for long guns. I think includes pistols as well hanging on the door. I would do a vaulted room but have no rooms without windows and would have to bar them. Multiple safes I think are better and so much easier to move into your space. The efficiency is less but not by a lot.
