Help? Sighting in 300 win mag

ok guys and gals. I am sighting my gun in for a 200 yd zero. Seekins 300 win mag using federal premium terminal ascent 200g bullets. Using MOA with vortex razor hd lt 4.5 -22x 50

I only have a 300yd range. I zeroed my gun in at 200 yds and found my dial for 300 yds.

I went back to two hundred yards to try and get my dial adjustment for 400 yds 500 yds. I used the shooters calculator with all my correct info Bullet coefficient, weight, muzzle velocity from garmin, elevation and temp.

I am at 200 yds and just reversed the info from the chart. Instead of being low I wanted to be high because I am only at 200 yds. 300worked good. After that I need help/suggestions

this is where I need someone’s expertise
At 200 and trying to hit 22” high the calculator says I need 22 clicks but when I am shooting I have to dial 40 clicks Why is this so far off?

is it because at 200 yds each click is only worth .5” and at an actual 400 yds each click is worth 1”
If this is the case then that would explain being so far off at 500 too, correct?

If I answered my own question please tell me

If not, then please help me

Thankyou

I might be confused too lol, but @200yds 1 moa ≈ 2 in so if you have an moa scope, then 22”/2 ≈11 moa. Scope has 0.25 moa clicks 11/.25=44 or roughly 40 clicks which checks out with what you’re doing right?

Yes. However if I want to find the correct moa at 400 yds …each click is 1 inch so 1moa is 4”. So according to shooters calculator 400 yds should be 5 1/2 MOA. But when I was trying to get the correct moa at 200 yds for a 400 yd shot I had to almost twice that amount (40 clicks or 10 moa)

so my moa was off according to shooters calculator. My guess is because I was using 1 mos = 2 inches instead of shooting at 400 yds where each moa is 4”

I guess I am trying to ask if I want to find the correct moa at 400 yds how high do I have to be? The math isn’t mathing when I tried to do it.

Ok I think I may have figured it out. Just need someone to verify if this idea might be correct.

I have my 200 yd zero. All information into shooters calculator is correct. If I create a chart it tells me what my MOA should be or at least close to it.

Idea: use the moa from my 200 yd zero chart. But if I want to know how high I would be hitting at 200 yds for 300,400,500 yds I could simply change my zero to what ever yardage I want to shoot and then look at the 200 yd elevation to see how high i would hit…???

I think your best bet is to confirm your dope at the longer ranges, 400, 500, etc. Your math checks out but bc of the angular nature of moa, it’s always going to be an indirect way of confirming your dope otherwise. So if 5 1/2 moa with a 200 yd zero should always be about 11” at 200 yards but although you can extrapolate that to what it should be at 500 or whatever it’s still indirect.

The way you’re converting angular adjustments (MOA/clicks) to linear measurements (inches) is where the breakdown is happening.

  • At 100 yards: 1 MOA≈1 inch

  • At 200 yards: 1 MOA≈2 inches

  • At 400 yards: 1 MOA≈4 inches

  • At 500 yards: 1 MOA≈5 inches

Your Vortex Razor HD LHT 4.5–22x50 has 1/4 MOA clicks.

  • At 100 yards: 1 click (1/4 MOA) = 0.25 inches

  • At 200 yards: 1 click (1/4 MOA) = 0.50 inches

  • At 400 yards: 1 click (1/4 MOA) = 1.00 inch

If you dial 5.5 MOA (22 clicks) on your turret while shooting at a 200-yard target:

  • The scope elevates your line of sight by 5.5 MOA.

  • At 200 yards, 1 MOA=2′′.

  • Therefore, dialing 5.5 MOA shifts your impact up by:

    5.5 MOA×2′′/MOA=11 inches high at 200 yards

Why you had to dial 40 clicks:

  • 40 clicks on a 1/4 MOA scope equals 10 MOA.

  • At 200 yards, 10 MOA×2′′/MOA=20 inches high.

  • You were physically trying to make the bullet strike 22 inches high on the 200-yard target. To get a 22′′ point-of-impact shift at 200 yards, you have to dial 11 MOA (44 clicks).

Thanks. I that is exactly how I was figuring everything out. I think, and please correct me if I am wrong.

if I want to know how high the bullet will impact at 200 yds but I am shooting for 300…. I could simply change my zero on the shooters calculator to 300 and then look at 200yd elevation and that will tell me how high the bullet will impact the the target at 200 yds but for a 300 yd shot??? And then do the same for 400 by changing the zero to 400? And for 500 and so on.

I would still be using my moa numbers from the 200 yd zero chart though. To at least get me close enough to them test and get field data from shots actually at that distance

If the answer is as simple as I just explained then I feel stupid and happy at the same time. I do think that putting my post up actually helped me as I could see responses and other views.
Almost like talking myself through it with sins buddies just doing it online hoping strangers will respond. But it helps me work through things.

I think you’ve got it. If you set the ballistic solver to zero at 300, the calculator figures out where the line of sight and bullet trajectory intersect at 300.

It should give you a table with intervals. Look at 200 yards on that table and it will show a positive number (+3.2 inches for example), that tells you exactly how high the bullet passes through a 200-yard target when dialed for a 300-yard zero. And you can do this for the various distances, a 400 yard zero may show a positive number of like 8.5 inches at 200 yards, etc etc

And don’t sweat it. I think you had the answer, but sometimes you just gotta put thoughts on paper…or digital paper in this case
