Hey Utah Guys! Quick question

Might be moving to Utah, are there any over the counter tags? I’m new to the draw stuff moved from Texas to Idaho almost a year back.
Also is there a waiting period like Idaho you have to wait to get license?

Are you talking about a resident license? You need to be living in the State for 6 months.

There are a few OTC tags available. For example you can buy a bull elk tag for private land. There are limited number and they go quickly. For the most part most tags are draw. General season deer tags usually take 2 to 3 years to draw.

So there isn’t anything really over the counter for public?

Not necessarily but there are tons of general tags you do have to apply for but which you can guarantee to get each year. Also tons of landowner tags.

You have to be a bit more crafty than in Idaho, but it can still be done.

Look into getting a lifetime Idaho license before you move!

Hey thanks for the reply! Can you elaborate a little bit? I’m used to hunting every year and I’m worried about losing that opportunity. Also, lifetime license?

There are two draws in Utah. A draw for limited tags which are the more highly prized, and then another draw for general tags which is very easy to get for many units. If you pick the general tags, you can get one every year as long as it’s not the most desired units.

Get the Idaho lifetime license before you leave the state.

That’s awesome so I can realistically hunt every year? Are those units like 5-10% success rates🤣

There are over the counter general season any bull elk and spike elk tags that you can buy in July every year for certain units. You have to buy the tag within the first few days they get released or they will sell out.

I’ve only lived in Utah a few years. I never get anything in that first draw. I always get something in the second draw. This year I had three bow elk tags but they were in the summer when I wasn’t free. One was way up north but I had one local tag and a second one I could’ve used with the second

Nice; yeah I’m a rifle hunter haven’t dipped my toe into bow yet. Seems like I should be able to get a general tag every year which seems promising.
