I am thinking of getting a new barrel for my AR15 for hunting hogs at under 200 yards. What would be the hardest hitting round that i could still use on that platform?
450 Bushmaster would certainly put a thump on them but not at 200 yards. I think a 6 ARC would probably be the best fit.
Go AR10 in 6.5cm or .308. I shoot a lot of hog and I use .308
The 22 ARC would be fun to try out in that platform. 6 ARC would probably hit harder.
How hard would a 6 Dasher hit? Does it fit in an AR15?
I either use a sub-sonic 300 Blackout or a 6.5 Grendel whenever I’m on my property in Texas. I have also used a 308 but the AR10 platform is heavier to carry around.
308 In the head drops them like a rock.
Maybe not the “hardest” hitter in existence, but you might consider 300 HAM’R, which hits harder than 300 Blackout.
PS - I see some people recommending 308, which will git’r done but def not on an AR-15 receiver.
My daughter shot a 150-200lbs hog at 115 yards with a .223 AR. Square shot on shoulder. Bullet bounced off. Neck shot would have killed it. So if you’re hunting sub 100lbs sows I think you’re good with a .223. Anything bigger needs something heavier than a 55 or 75 grain bullet. I think 6mm minimum. And like Steve mentioned above, .308 won’t work. That’s an AR10 and I have never heard of that convertion (15 → 10).
Thanks all, I am liking the idea of a 450 bushmaster. Would you be able to use it effectively at 200-250 yards?
If not what would the 6 arc be comparable to power wise?
This is my Pig Gun. Seekins Precision SP10 in .308, Daniel Defense Soundguard SG30TI Suppressor, Pulsar Thermion Duo DXP50 4k daylight plus 640x480 Thermal.
Several of my buddies and I like the 6.5 Grendel. Lighter than an AR10 with plenty of energy at 200 yds and well beyond for hogs. Very similar performance to the 6 ARC.
2 birds one stone for me. 450 bushmaster. Went through the sow and the jacket took the piglet. Sow dropped in her tracks but the piglet ran about 40 yards. Granted, i shot these at about 60 yds. I personally wouldnt trust myself or the rifle to take a shot at 200 plus. Maybe out to around 125.
I shot a friend’s 450B through a previously unshot bowling pin. It went completely through the bowling pin and stopped on the far side between the wood and the plastic cover of the bowling pin. Not sure you need that to shoot a hog but it was impressive.
