Hornady 6.8 western ammo?!?

Was really surprised to see Hornady come out with 6.8 Western ammo. Thoughts?

I’m wondering how it’ll do in shorter barrels since they picked a heavy 176gr bullet.

Yeah, does this mean I need to start watching out for swarms of locusts and rivers running red with blood?

I haven’t seen any of the videos yet only thumbnails. Did they eat any Crow when they made this announcement, or were they more like " we’ve always been interested and supportive of this round"??

Barnes did an entire podcast on shorter barrels. They said that the newer chamberings tended to perform better than the older ones, 7prc versus 300 WM for instance. However, since they’re primarily dealing with copper bullets they are primarily dealing with lighter bullets so have to wonder how much bullet weight is playing into that versus cartridge design.

I’m not surprised that Hornady went with the larger heavier bullet. They’re all about BC, and doing things with efficiency over raw power or speed.

Overall though, happy to see someone else breathing some more life into this chambering

I’m happy to see it. 6.8 Western is a great cartridge worthy of a solid push from the industry.

Maybe I’m connecting dots that aren’t there, but I can’t help but wonder if this is all related to +Peak. If Hornady does not have an answer ready to go, they are going to lose a lot of market share in the days ahead. Is this just them diversifying the portfolio a bit more to try and offset some of the potential loss?

Whatever their reasoning, I’m glad to see it. Swift announced they’re coming out with a 6.8 Western offering in 2027 as well.
