do others struggle to get a good crimp with Hornady dies without crushing the case? Loaded up my first batch of 7 PRC with Hornady dies and killed 3 before I got the crimp set, and it still isn’t as ideal as I’d like. I’ve got a set of RCBS dies I may try on the next 50.
I have never found the need to crimp unless loading a straight wall cartridge like 450 Bushmaster or 350 Legend.
I load some heavy caliber too, 300 WM, 300 RUM and 338 Lapua Mag
I didn’t used to bother but have had issues with seating depth changing that a crimp fixed
Bushing die and mandrel die no need to crimp. 6.5prc. 300WM
You use be seating them way out to the point that you are not using all the case neck as a load bearing surface. I avoid that.
Depends on the rifle, longest I’ll seat is .005” under max coal.
.005 under max COAL. That is giving up a lot of powder space in the brass. What caliber and bullet are you loading?
Oops, I see the 7 PRC now that I take my head out of my tail. I don’t load that specific caliber so there may be something that I am missing with the brass but I would guess it has to do with neck light tension if the bullet is not staying put..
