I have never used ELDx on game. Got a cow elk hunt booked for next fall in Utah, and the guide I’m going w is encouraging me to shoot a 162g ELDx rather than the 139g LRX I use for deer. I know him pretty well, and he swears by that bullet, but I’ve heard a lot of mixed reviews… He said he’s seen too many elk run from Barnes bullets penciling. I’ve read a lot of horror stories on eldx bullets tho as well, but he swears by them. Would love to hear opinions on the eldx from anyone who’s had success w them on elk or any larger game. Thanks
What chambering will you be using?
Between me and my kids, we’ve killed over 100 animals with the eldx and we’ve never wounded and lost one. Several elk with the eldx in there too. No hesitations with it as long as you have a good shot angle.
That helps and is great to hear. Thanks Jim
ELD-X works great. Especially since you’ll likely be taking a farther shot when hunting elk. I would say see how they shoot in your rifle. Partitions would be another great option I would be looking at too.
Either my 7 mag or 280ai
He said most of their shots are 200-400 yards. I love the accubond and partition, I just like to shoot a lot and preferably with the same bullet I hunt with, and those are both crazy expensive.
No personal Elk experience.
The main problem people run into with the lrx bullet is shooting them too slow. Although, that 139 will expand at a fairly low velocity, at least compared to most all copper bullets.
The main complaint I’ve seen with ELDX is when you shoot them too fast, and then hit strong bone. They tend to shatter.
Thus, if you’re using a hot round with good velocity, and/or shooting at closer distances the Barnes bullet May work better. On the other hand, if you’re shooting with a round that doesn’t produce that much velocity and/or you’re shooting longer distances the eldx is better
I have taken 3 bull elk with the Eldx with a 7 prc. Every one i hunt with uses the eldx as well and we have not lost an elk. The major complaint is they don’t pass thru and people complain on there recovered game they wish they would have passed all the way thru. The key phrase is recovered game. They blow up inside the animal and put all of there energy into the impact. Where when you use a copper bonded bullet it passes all the way thru and does not in my opinion hit as hard.
Good to hear. Thanks
